"Please take my daughters, Cass! I'm going to die." Nelani, the merwoman he had met a while back, was begging him to save her daughters.

He stared at her.

This was far beyond right.

He felt the urge to punch a wall. The stupid virus. The stupid dying. And there he was. Unaffected. And now he was supposed to adopt two kids from his friend who was dying.

"Shit."

"Cass! Please! You're the only one I know who isn't affected!"

He couldn't do it.

Nelani was shaking. Cassaras helped her sit down. "Cassaras. If you can't take them both-" She hesitated, knowing what it meant to separate the sisters, "take one."

His eyes were shut. He knew he could do that.

Slowly he nodded. "I will take one. What will you do with the other?"

The minutes passed. She didn't answer.

She was shaking less now.

Then finally she stood up. And cried. Hesitantly, Cassaras hugged her.

The years pass. The young wanderer grows up and becomes her own person.

Cass was careful to not let her come into contact with water.

He decided to settle down until Thea was old enough to go on her own journey.

But until then he took on a job as a bodyguard and send Thea to a regular school. When he was at work, his neighbors took turns looking out for Thea. They seemed to love the young energetic girl. Cass recommended the school an interpreter with the name of Hagen which he met at the club he was working for.

She picked up lip reading quickly.

He himself learned a lot in this time. He refreshed his sign language skills, he bought a phone and a laptop, learned how to use them, and soon the walls of their small flat were filled with bookshelves stuffed to the brim. The bow and arrows got their special place on their sideboard.

Still, he missed the ocean. He hadn't gone into the water since he had adopted Thea.

"Why do I have to wear these?" Thea was referring to her fingerless gloves she now threw on the counter when they entered home. "It's to protect you from the water. Remember what I told you about the water being bad for you?" She nodded slowly. "When you were younger you put your hands in the water and touched your ears and feet. It left scars. We want to avoid that happening again." He hoped it would satisfy her. Young Thea had a curiosity he had missed in himself. She nodded again.

They were walking home from their shopping trip. Thea was gesturing wildly talking about a new book she wanted about fables. Cass was laughing along. For the first time in a while, he noticed that he was happy. For six years he had not felt this way.

Cass noticed three figures following them. He told Thea to wait and turned. "Hey!" He shouted.

They came closer. "What do you want?" The figures -two men and a woman- tried to circle Thea and Cass.

"Remember me?" A tall guy with brown hair and glasses dressed in a shirt and shorts came forward. 'Their leader', Cassaras thought.

But Cass did not remember him. He guessed a guest of "Waldecke" he had kicked out.

"I told you I would find you and get my revenge! Get him!" The two henchmen shoved Cass against the closest street lantern.

Shocked, Thea stared at them.

"And who may you be, little girl?" Thea paid no attention to him. She couldn't hear him. He said it again a little louder. At the lantern, Cass resisted a little, avoiding punches and kicks here and there but never attacking back.

Thea now noticed she was being talked to. She screamed. Tried to. The leader grabbed her by the wrist and tried to shove her mouth close.

Big mistake. Cass was next to them in seconds. The only thing the guy could do was look surprised when Cass shoved his fist into the guy's face.

"What the fuck man?" "Leave her alone." "You're crazy." "And you're dead, if you dare touch her again."

He moved away from them. His two henchmen came to his help. "Yeesh. Freak!" Cassaras rolled his eyes. "Listen here. I don't even remember you. So, if you could leave her out of this I would really appreciate it." It was not an asking tone.

"You freak homosexual! You tried to hit on me!" Now Cass remembered.

He was at the cocktail bar after his shift and drinking a lemonade when he noticed him. The guy was very intensely hitting on a young woman. She was trying to avoid conflict and reject him calmly, but he kept pushing.

Cass got an idea and headed over. He leaned over the tall man's shoulder and whispered in his ear. "Hey pretty." The guy turned away from the woman who headed away quickly. He tried to move away from Cassaras "Who are you?" Cass smiles. "Name's Daniel. Care for a drink?" "What the hell dude! I'm not into that!" Cass came closer, the guy tried to back away. "Oh, don't be like that. I know you just pretend to not like me to make me like you even more." Cass winked. In hindsight Cassaras laughed at the face the guy made. "Yo, I said no." Cassaras grabbed him by the shoulder. "Come on now-" The guy tried to shove him away. "Let me go!" Cass finally let go. The smile he tried to hold fell in seconds. "Did you like that? No? Good. Get out of here."

"What the hell! You can't just do that! You weirdo. Oh, just you wait. I will get my revenge on you." Cassaras had laughed.

And now Cassaras laughed again. "I'm not even into men. This was to teach you a lesson on how to treat other people. Get out of my face." He snarled.

The henchmen backed away. Their leader was not inclined to follow the command.

He signed for Thea to come. That this was over.

Thea seemed a bit shocked but after walking a while she started signing about the book again.
