||Warning: Bullying||
Then Thea moved to middle school. Things got harder. Hagen came with her. Her few friends didn't. New people, a lot of new people. Young people who have a sense for difference and a distaste for it.
Thea didn't find any friends. Thea could read their lips, but they could not freely communicate with her unless they had pen and paper.
In addition, she dressed „weird". She found Cass' old clothes and convinced him to get her a bunch of blouses, shirts, sweaters and vests in her size. She loved how she dressed but her classmates did not appreciate Thea's style as much as Cass did.
One morning, one like any other, they ate together. When Cass poured his glass of water and drank from it, she imagined seeing colors. She said nothing, she probably only imagined it.
Soon enough it becomes clear to her that she had not imagined it. She could see colors in the water. And her mind tells her what happened in the water and what people felt.
Unfortunately, she realizes this in school.
A girl from her class drank out of a clear bottle. The colors told Thea she was jealous. She writes down that there is no need to be jealous and gives it to the girl. Who looked at her like she was crazy.
When it's break time a few kids come towards her. They screamed at her. She doesn't understand. She asks herself if they understood she couldn't hear them. Then one punched her.
The teachers don't notice. She is a bit quieter than usual but gets home without anybody saying anything.
Cassaras immediately asks about what was wrong when she walks through the door.
She pulls up her shirt and shows him the bruise.
He had made her tea and gotten her a painkiller. She laid down on their couch and fell asleep. Cass sat next to her.
The first thing she signed when she finally woke up again was asking what they would eat for dinner. "What do you want to eat?" "Pizza" He nodded and got up to call their local Italian place.
"Please tell me what happened in school." He had asked over dinner. She stayed quiet. "Thea, please, I need to know what happend." She hesitated again. Then she told him. "Dad, I think I can see colors when you and other people drink water."
Thea paused. Cass narrowed his eyes. He knew he would have to talk about the oceans with Thea. He did not expect this talk to happen so soon. She continued. "I saw weird colors and shapes in her water. My mind told me she was jealous. I tried to- help her. I told her she didn't need to be jealous." Thea paused again and took a deep breath trying not to shake. "Next break I just ate my bread like I always do but a group of my classmates came after me." "Do you know who?" Thea shook her head. Everything felt a bit blurry.
"Thea, I think I have waited too long. Please forgive me. I need to tell you what your cold water allergy is really about."
And he told her.
When he finished, Thea stood up. Without signing another word, she went into her room and shut the door behind her. Cassaras took a deep breath. He prepared the pizza.
It took a few weeks in which Thea didn't talk much with Cassaras. He understood and waited for her to calm down. How could he keep something this major from her.
Cass talked to the teachers and for a while the other kids left her alone. When her classmates went after her the next time, she decided she had to be prepared, because this would happen again.
She went to Hagen, who called Cassaras for her and told him to pick her up from school. He did.
"Dad? Can you teach me how to fight?" He raised an eyebrow. "What happened?" Thea pulled up her sleeve to show him more bruises.
When he saw them, he realized something. She needed to be able to defend herself. She was right, he needed to train her.
He nodded. They were going to do this.
Thea's bruises were almost healed when they started training.
At first Thea had trouble with her body movements and balance. It didn't help that she was more interested in her books than sports. Cass was careful not to hurt her.
Thea got better. When the bullying happened again, she couldn't yet evade their punches but at least she could punch back. It took the bullies by surprise. They stared at her in shock. The guy she punched had a bloody nose. She would get in trouble. She didn't care.
When they left the headmaster's office Thea grinned at Cass and he ruffled her hair.
They didn't try to pick on her ever again.
It took a few years of continuous training, but she could stand her ground against Cassaras and sometimes even beat him.
The first time she beat him, Cass ordered pizza. "As a celebration." Cass told her. She knew he was just as exhausted as she was.
Cassaras couldn't be prouder of her.
One evening when she was almost seventeen, she was reading her book on the history of the sword. She had gotten a job as an assistant in an archive and was participating memorizing information.
Cassaras often wandered around the town now that she was older. Sometimes she came with him, sometimes she stayed home and read.
That was why she was surprised to notice the door being unlocked and Cassaras entering through said door.
Exhausted from running up the stairs he told her: "They found her. We have to save her" Thea layed the book down and jumped up. "Who?" "The last Elvarion. Your sister."
