Tristan observed that Renee seemed increasingly withdrawn, lost in his own thoughts. He appeared downcast, speaking little, and at times, he was overly attached. While he didn’t voice any complaints, the concern for his well-being weighed heavily on Tristan. Determined to break through the silence, he resolved to encourage Renee to talk to him. and one evening, Renee opened up to Tristan about his fears and how they weighed on him.
"Sometimes, I feel like I shouldn't even seek happiness because I'm terrified that if I do, something terrible will happen. Take my dad's death, for example. It was meant to be a joyful occasion, but it turned into anything but. I'm afraid to let myself be truly happy, only to have it all come crashing down when something bad occurs."
"I dread the thought of losing someone I care about and never seeing them again. Each day, those fears gnaw at me from the inside. It's like a part of me that I can't seem to release," he confessed.
Tristan listened intently, processing everything like a compassionate therapist before responding.
"I'm not sure how to say this, but I want you to know that I'm trying to understand what you've shared. Life is short, including ours. That's why we should embrace happiness whenever we can. Joy is temporary, but during those moments, we need to treasure them. Shift your focus to the positive aspects of life, imagine the best possible outcomes, and try to release the negativity. This way can help you feel more at ease and content within yourself."
"While it's natural to fear losing loved ones, we mustn't allow that fear to overshadow the time we have to create beautiful memories with them. I know this will be challenging for you, but please give it a try."
"I get that, but how am I supposed to do that? I feel so lost, and I'm struggling to make sense of everything," Renee exclaimed, tears welling in his eyes.
Tristan gently rubbed his thighs, concern etched on his face as he looked at him.
"Have you considered going to therapy?" he suggested. Renee paused, his eyes slightly reddened as he contemplated the idea.
"I... I don't know how to feel about that... I just..." It wasn't that he was opposed to the idea of therapy, but he couldn't shake the feeling that he might be too broken to seek help.
Tristan offered, "It's just a suggestion. If it's not something you want to pursue, that's completely okay. Just take your time to consider it. Remember, your choice will impact you the most. This isn't about anyone else—it's about you. So take a moment to really think it over."
Renee let out a soft sigh, nestling closer to Tristan against the headboard.
"I appreciate you being here and hearing me out."
"I'm always here for you, no matter what happens."
Tristan understood that Renee didn't to celebrate his birthday, so he decided to lay low. The last thing he wanted was to add to Renee's sadness, especially on a day that should be filled with joy. Losing a loved one on your birthday is tough, and he was determined to not make things harder for him.
Instead, he focused on lifting Renee's spirits as much as possible.
He encouraged Renee to reminisce about his father, sharing stories of their time together when he was still alive. Tristan wanted to help him recall those cherished memories that could spark a smile.
And that’s exactly what happened.
Renee opened up about his childhood, sharing countless memories that lit up his face with happiness, Tristan had never him that happy before. He spoke of how he used to love hiking, arm wrestling, riding bikes, and playing football with his dad.
