Day after day, hobby after hobby, sport after sport, Bokuto Mizuna was never satisfied. It wasn't a skill issue, no. She always excelled at the given activity. But there was never any joy. A hole in her heart that was yet to be filled.
She's tried many things. Basketball, gymnastics, dance, tennis. She always succeeded, but her heart didn't feel anything. A cloud that never seemed to fade away. A certain numbness that never left. New things happened nearly everyday, but she didn't fear it. Because nothing would change. But this new concept, volleyball, new people, would this bring her joy? That was for her to find out.
Fukurodani Academy. A prestigious Tokyo high school, along with being a volleyball powerhouse with the addition of her older brother, Bokuto Koutarou. Koutarou was quite an interesting guy. A very sensitive and emotional person, but really pure and good one, too. His mood switches and sways at any given moment, but he really is a good guy. A passionate person, too. Striving to be the best, the leader, the ace of his team. Mizuna really did have someone to look up to. She wanted to be like him. If anything, she was jealous of him. Jealous of the fact that he could love something so much, to be able to put his mind to something and be hooked on it. Something she felt she could never do. Though, that feeling, would not last forever.
Step by step, she made her way to her class. Class 1-5... guess she did alright on her entrance exams, unlike her brother who barely passed...
She opened the door, chose a seat rather further in the back, and put some earbuds in. As much as she was good at school, it didn't mean she enjoyed it. Introductions, blah blah blah, people she didn't care about, until she saw a certain someone. Akaashi Keiji, in particular. Akaashi was so beautiful... Blue eyes and raven hair. Natural beauty.
"Hello, I'm Akaashi Keiji. Nice to meet you." He quickly said his introduction and sat back down. Looks like he only says what needs to be said.
Mizuna stared at him, but quickly turned back around before it got awkward.
"And Bokuto Mizuna?" The teacher called on her for her introduction.
"Oh, um," She stood up after she took out her earbuds.
"Bokuto Mizuna, nice to meet you." She gave a soft smile before sitting down.
Chatter, whispers, everything. Looks like her brother had made quite an impact at her school. This also meant making friends wasn't a safe option. Male friends meant possibly being hit on, and female friends meant possibly being used to get to her brother.
Minutes, then hours pass. Bell after bell until the dismissal bell had rung. She made her way to the gymnasium. Her situation was quite interesting. The Girls' Volleyball team of Fukurodani wasn't exactly the greatest. They usually lost the first or second round of qualifiers. Mizuna wanted at least a chance of getting to her happiness that she's craved for years. Meaning, she would have to join the boys' team. Her brother had made the whole scenario a bit better. He said he'd talk to the team to give them a heads up, and cheered her up. He really is a good big brother. Walking out of class slightly dazed, she accidentally bumped into a somewhat familiar face...
"Oh, sorry... Akaashi." She lay on the floor with dusted pink cheeks, embarrassment covering her face. Apologetic eyes looked her way.
"Sorry, are you alright?" He held his hand out, offering to help her up. "..Bokuto, was it?"
She took his hand and got back to her feet. "Mizuna is fine, I have an older brother here. I'm fine. Sorry, I wasn't paying attention."
"It's alright. Where are you headed? Students should usually be on their way home by now..." He said, trailing off a bit.
"Volleyball gymnasium. You?"
"Me, too. Joining the girls' team?" He said, though already assuming the answer, only to be wrong.
"Heh.. Actually... no. No offense to the girls' team, but I'm pretty sure my only opportunity of successfully playing volleyball is joining the boys' team. One person can't single-handedly make a team good. Volleyball is a team game." She probably said more than she should, but what's said is said.
"Hm.. I see. Let's go, shall we?"
They made their way to the gym.
"...Yeah and... OH MIZUNA-CHAN!!" Bokuto Koutarou charged at his younger sister as soon as she stepped through the doors.
He pretty much attacked her with a very tight hug.
"Onii-chan, I love you, too, but please, stop suffocating me-" Mizuna said, slowly losing oxygen due to the tightness of her brother's grasp.
"Onii-chan? Bokuto Koutarou is your older brother?" Akaashi made the connection a bit later than he probably should have.
"Yep! That's me, Bokuto Koutarou, this one's older brother! Ready for your tryouts?" The much more ecstatic and energized one ran around the gym, welcoming the new people attempting to join the team.
There were many talented players and trainees. But Akaashi was a skilled setter. (For those who aren't Haikyu!! fans and are just randomly reading this, the setter is the one who tosses the ball to the spiker.) A well-rounded player, both good at defense and offense, and able to make tough decisions in a split second.
On the other hand, Mizuna, although starting in just her first year, was amazingly skilled. She didn't have the sheer power that her sibling did, but she was more of a strategist, making intelligent plays for every spike. She succeeded in any type of spike. Cross, line, cuts. Everything. She was going to be a needed weapon for the team.
"How was that toss?" Akaashi asked for feedback, willing to improve. This time, the said member was Mizuna.
"Relatively fine. A bit higher would be nice."
"Got it."
They went through it again. Toss, set, and spike. A perfect toss. And..
Bam!
"Perfect toss. Nice job."
"Thanks."
Let's just say the two had some sort of unspoken communication. Simple responses and flawless plays.
