Ethan soon discovered that Jay wasn't just charming - he was also incredibly persuasive. He'd convinced Ethan to skip their last class of the day, insisting on showing him the "real town."

They ended up at a quiet beach, waves lapping at the shore and the smell of salt thick in the air. Jay tossed his shoes aside and rolled up his pants, wading into the water. Ethan hesitated but eventually followed, the cool water washing over his feet.

"So," Jay said, looking out over the ocean. "What's the real reason you're here?"

Ethan was quiet for a moment, watching a seagull skim over the waves. "My parents wanted me out of the city," he finally said. "Too many... distractions, they said."

Jay laughed. "A city boy with too many distractions. Let me guess. Parties? Girls? Sneaking out at night?"

Ethan shook his head, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Not exactly."

Jay studied him, his gaze intense but not unkind. "Well, whatever you're running from, you'll be safe here. Not much to get into trouble with in a place like this." He nudged Ethan with his shoulder, his voice light. "But maybe I can show you some hidden gems."

Over the next few weeks, Jay did just that. He took Ethan to old abandoned buildings, hidden trails through the forest, and secret spots along the coast where the stars seemed to hang just a little bit closer. They laughed and talked about dreams, fears, and regrets in a way that Ethan had never been able to with anyone else. Jay was the kind of person who seemed fearless, yet he had moments of quiet vulnerability, times when he'd go silent and stare out at the horizon, as if he were searching for something far beyond his reach.

As the summer wore on, their friendship deepened. Ethan felt himself drawn to Jay in ways he couldn't explain, a feeling that lingered in the silence between their words, in the gentle nudge of Jay's shoulder against his own.
