Jasper’s POV

“No,” Kayla cried almost tackling me to the ground near the front door. Oh, here we go again, I thought sighing for what seems like the tenth time this week. Two weeks ago, on my nineteenth birthday, Jace and I decided to go on a road trip. Find out how everything is going outside these gates and maybe see if there are more survivors. And as you can obviously see, Kayla was…is still dealing with us leaving.

I hugged her “Ma, it’s time for us to go on our own. See what’s out there,” I told her rubbing her back trying to comfort her. Even though I wasn’t related to her, she is still my mother-like figure for Jace and me.

She sobbed “But what if you guys don’t make it back to me?” she said looking at me. Her eyes were still that violet color with laughing lines, curvy body, five-foot-five, heart shaped face and dark hair. Her tan skin looked tanner from being in the sun for so long. She still looked the same for a twenty-three year old.

“Have some faith in us, Sky,” Jace said coming down the stairs with his backpack.

She looked at him and whimpered “No,” she said letting go of me and went to jump on him, but Sam caught her just on time chuckling.

“Leave the boys alone, babe. You can’t keep tackling and jumping on people, Kay,” he said wrapping his arms around her waist pulling her back on his chest rubbing her stomach.

We saw as a blush appeared on her cheeks, but her eyes were shinning with excitement. Six months ago we found out that she was actually expecting a baby, but we won’t know if it’s a girl or boy or both until the day the baby arrives. And I won’t lie. I’m excited as hell to see and hold the baby. I’m hoping it’s a girl, but Jace is hoping it’s a boy so we’ve been arguing about it. It usually ends with us throwing knives or the first thing we touch at each other.

I got up and went to her “We’ll come back, mom, I promise,” I told her smiling kissing her cheek.

Jace kissed her other cheek “Don’t worry, I’ll watch his ass,” he said laughing and I punched his shoulder slightly glaring.

“Let’s see who’ll watch whose ass,” I grumbled.

Kayla chuckled “Silly boys, just come back home please,” she said in a serious tone. Six years ago we managed to settle down in the evergreens making our own town working together to rebuilding what was left of civilization. We found few survivors, while making the houses. Houses that were one floor or two floors, hospital-like building with supplies, and made a park for the kids with swings, slides, and monkey bars.

We nodded “We will,” we said at the same time.

She sigh nodding “Then go before I change my mind,” she sniffed hugging us tightly. “I love you boys.”

We chuckled “We love you too,” we said and headed for the door stopping to look at them again. Who would have thought that we would be leaving for a while? I looked around the house we helped build. It was made of light wood, dark brown couch with loveseat and recliner, glass coffee table everything in front of a chimney. The walls had some pictures that Kayla tried to draw and got better with practice.

I looked at them “See you guys soon,” I said and went outside my Dodge Magnum SXT waiting on us. Dean had given it to me three years when I turned sixteen saying I would need it if I wanted to go somewhere. Of course I’ve used it to get supplies for everyone, but never for long trips like I’m planning to.

Jace put his backpack in the trunk “Are you ready, brother?” he said looking at me excitement written all over his face.

I smiled “Hell yeah…why?” I asked him getting in the driver side just as he closed the trunk and went around to the passenger side getting in.
