CHAPTER 29
Amber Marigold

Everyone looked at her as she answered the call. In the singular chandelier light, they were cold, marble-like figures.
"Hello?" Amber greeted.
"Oy, it's Enz. Is Blake there?"
"Uh," she looked up and offered her phone to the cyng of the West. "It's for you. Someone named Enz."
He took the phone with his good arm.
"Enzo Vier?" he asked.
The room held its breath, waiting but unsure for what.
"Yes, it's me," he continued. "No, the gates are locked. Yes? Who told you? No name. Right. Well, we need your men and as many guns as you can bring. By next month's shipment. I understand that, Enz. Yes, it's a risk. Enz. Enzo, listen." His voice went cold. "I, Blake Moreno Bowmen, Cyng of the West, call upon the E-twenty-four gang as my sworn blood banner. If you so choose as to break your oath, it shall be paid for in blood."
He went quiet, and Amber could have sworn she heard everyone's heartbeat stop. There was only the faint, crackling voice coming from the other side of the call. Blake listened on, and when it seemed it would last forever, his lip curled up.
"That's what I thought," he said and ended the call. He handed the phone back. "We have a month to prepare for their arrival."
"Must it take so long?" she asked.
"Our gap for smuggling in goods only opens at the end of each month. Besides, some of us are still injured."
Her eyes drifted to his arm. The arm she shot. They still had not talked about it. She tore her focus away and held herself.
"So, then, the date would be end of September? The thirtieth?" she asked, and he nodded. "Alright. A month it is."
With a date set and a plan bringing everyone together, the group dispersed with a new sense of purpose. What started as hostile threats, then quiet suspicion, finally turned into mutual interest.
Amber headed back to her room and immediately put her phone on charge. She stayed hunched over it.
Amber
Im so sorry for putting you in that position
23:55Mr President
If you wanted my help, you could've just asked, Marigold.
23:55Amber
I know, I know. It wasnt for my sake. I trust you but I knew blake and owen would have their guard up. I had to show them that it doesnt matter what your intentions are. Even if youre playing us we still have a use for you. We can manipulate you. I had to make them feel like they still hold the upper hand. Its easier to trust a person if you have a gun pointed at their head after all
23:58Mr President
I suppose I can't argue with that.
23:58Amber
You forgive me?
23:59Mr President
I'm the one who must ask for forgiveness.
23:59Amber stared at her phone. Did she honestly do all that for Blake and Owen? Or did a part of her need the assurance as well?
Amber
I can trust you... right?
00:00Mr President
When have I ever said that?
