CHAPTER TWO

The rest of the train ride was mostly peaceful. The trio told me about how adventurous their past few years had been, while I described some of the less confidential parts of Beauxbatons and France. I was starting to hope that I'd get sorted into Gryffindor, just so that I would have friends throughout the year.

The train arrived, and I followed the trio to their carriages, which I greatly appreciated. It was much more sophisticated than running through walls or sitting in trains where you're allowed to run freely. However, as the cold rain came down on us hard, I wished the train had gone a little further.

I immediately recognized the great, black, horse-like creatures to be Thestrals as we approached the carriages. I had a bit of a soft spot for them, in at Beauxbatons I'd always go to see them after class. But when I heard some third years talking of how the carriages pull themselves, I decided to keep my mouth shut. I got into the carriage with Harry, Ron, Hermione and the boy named Neville, who was actually quite sweet. I knew I'd end up close with him, we shared a lot of the same interests, especially in plants, and I could tell he had a kind soul.

A tall witch wearing green dress robes greeted me at the entrance, pulling me aside after yelling at a Poltergeist named Peeves. She introduced herself as Professor Minerva McGonagall, before explaining that she had already gotten to speak with my siblings about it, but we would just sit with our friends until the first year's sorting is up, and then we would get sorted ourselves. She watched as I walked into the Great Hall before going back to the entrance to wait for the first years.

I managed to find the trio within the sea of robes due to the straight line of 4 red heads of hair that I could easily tell were the Weasleys. I got a seat in between Hermione and a girl named Lavender Brown, easily slipping into the conversation like I'd been there the whole time.

Professor McGonagall placed a stool on the ground, before placing an old, dusty, patchy hat on it. Everyone stared in silence, until the hat's brim opened like a mouth and broke into song.

"A thousand years or more ago,
When I was newly sewn,
There lived four wizards of renown,
Whose names are still well known:
Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor,
Fair Ravenclaw, from glen,
Sweet Hufflepuff, from valley broad,
Shrewd Slytherin, from fen.
They shared a wish, a hope, a dream,
They hatched a daring plan
To educate young sorcerers
Thus Hogwarts School began.
Now each of these four founders
Formed their own house, for each
Did value different virtues
In the ones they had to teach.
By Gryffindor, the bravest were
Prized far beyond the rest;
For Ravenclaw, the cleverest
Would always be the best;
For Hufflepuff, hard workers were
Most worthy of admission;
And power-hungry Slytherin
Loved those of great ambition.
While still alive they did divide
Their favourites from the throng,
Yet how to pick the worthy ones
When they were dead and gone?
'Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
He whipped me off his head
The founders put some brains in me
So I could choose instead!
Now slip me snug about your ears,
I've never yet been wrong,
I'll have a look inside your mind
And tell where you belong!"

The Hall burst into applause, and my eyes were wide as I stared at the hat.

"I have to put that old thing on my head?"

Hermione chuckled with a nod, gently patting my back. McGonagall returned in from her seat, before pulling out a large scroll.

"When I call your name, you will place the Hat on your head and sit on the stool. When the Hat announces your house, you will go and sit at the appropriate table." she explained, before starting to call names.
I didn't pay much attention, the nerves getting to me slightly. After a while, there were no more students sitting at the front of the Hall.
