Lucian's POV: The Calm Before the Storm
The air in the courtyard had been thick with tension, but as the last remnants of Vane's power dissipated into the night, Lucian allowed himself a single, fleeting smile. The boy had potential, that much was clear. But Lucian wasn't worried. He wasn't even challenged—not yet. He had faced much worse in his life.
With the flick of his wrist, he activated his ability to teleport, and in an instant, the grand courtyard of Erebus's estate was replaced by the dim, foreboding corridors of the Thorne Castle. The magic hummed through his veins, a familiar rush.
He was back.
Thorne Castle – Inside the Hall of Shadows
Lucian materialized in the grand hall of the Thorne Castle, the cold stone walls whispering his arrival. His body ached slightly, but it was nothing he couldn't ignore. As he stepped into the hall, his sharp eyes immediately met the curious gazes of his family—his father, Marcus, his mother, Seraphina, his sister, Elara, and Selene.
For a moment, the room was eerily silent. Then, as Lucian took his first step forward, his mother's voice broke the quiet with a touch of concern.
"Lucian," Seraphina's voice was soft, but sharp with worry. She was immediately by his side, her healing magic already flickering at the tips of her fingers. "What happened? You look... disheveled. Bruises?"
Lucian didn't flinch as he looked down at his torn shirt, his sweat-soaked skin, and the faint bruises blossoming across his neck and arms. He gave a small, almost imperceptible smile.
"It was nothing," he said coolly, brushing off the concern. But his words didn't fool his family. They all saw the slight grimace in his eyes, the subtle way he moved to conceal the discomfort in his body.
His father, Marcus Thorne, studied him with narrowed eyes. His gaze was intense, yet not unkind. "Did something happen? We felt your energy surge from here. It's unlike anything we've felt before."
Lucian wiped his hand over his face, exhaling slowly as his mind replayed the exchange in the courtyard with Vane and his friends. His heart rate was starting to calm, but there was a bitter edge to the thoughts that swirled in his mind.
"It was Vane. He's more powerful than I thought," Lucian admitted with a slight scowl. "He's dangerous. But we'll deal with him in time."
Marcus Thorne's Reaction
Marcus's face was unreadable for a moment, but then he gave a single, slow nod. "We always knew the Erebus boy would be a challenge. But you're prepared for this, Lucian. You're stronger than that. Are you injured?"
Lucian shrugged, feeling the weight of his father's concern settle deeper than he expected. Marcus was a man of few words, but when he spoke, it was with the authority of a leader who had seen his fair share of battles. Lucian didn't like showing weakness in front of him, especially not when he had failed to land a decisive blow on Vane.
"I'm fine," Lucian said, his voice steady, though he couldn't hide the slight edge of frustration that lingered in his tone. "He's stronger than I thought. But I held my own."
His mother, Seraphina, didn't buy the "I'm fine" line. She stepped forward, lifting her hand to gently press against his shoulder. Magic rippled from her fingertips as she scanned his body for injuries. "Lucian, this isn't like you. I sense the toll it took on you. You've never come back like this before."
Lucian shook his head, avoiding her gaze. He had expected the bruises and exhaustion. The exchange with Vane, though short, had drained more from him than he was willing to admit. But that wasn't the real issue. He couldn't let his family see his weakness. Not when the stakes were this high.
"I'm not hurt," he repeated, gritting his teeth as his body protested the words. "Just tired."
Seraphina's expression softened, but there was a glimmer of doubt in her eyes. "You're not just tired, Lucian. But this will wait. The real question is... why do I feel so much power emanating from you? It's unlike anything I've sensed before."
Elara Thorne – The Elemental Sorceress
From across the room, Elara crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow, her fiery spirit not one to remain silent. "You don't look like a man who's 'fine' after a scrap. What exactly happened out there, Lucian?"
She had always been the direct one in the family, never hesitating to challenge Lucian or anyone else who stood in her way. Her powers over the elements—fire, earth, water, air—had long earned her a reputation, even among their own family.
Lucian sighed, rubbing his temple as he took a seat in the shadows of the room. He was beginning to feel the exhaustion creep in, but he knew he needed to face this now. His family wouldn't leave him alone until he did.
"I... showed him something," Lucian finally said, lowering his voice, so only his closest family could hear. "I used all five elements. The Windsars' power. I made sure he knew who he was dealing with."
There was a moment of silence, then a sharp intake of breath from his father. Marcus's voice was low but filled with a strange sense of approval. "The Windsars' power? Are you sure, Lucian? That's a dangerous move. The elemental magics are unpredictable."
Lucian lifted his head and locked eyes with his father. "He needs to understand the depth of our family's power. The Thorne legacy... the Windsars' alliance... it's not something we hide from anyone. But it won't be enough. We need to strike fast. Before he grows even stronger."
Seraphina's Warning
Seraphina stepped forward again, her face etched with concern. "Lucian, this isn't just about power. You've been gone for hours. You've left yourself open to something much darker. The curse of the Cursed One is waking, and you can feel it. You need to stay cautious. The power you're playing with... it's dangerous, even for us."
Lucian's gaze hardened. "I'll handle it, mother. I know what I'm doing."
Seraphina didn't argue. She simply gave him a knowing look, one that spoke of decades of experience in magic and in the hidden dangers lurking just beneath the surface.
Lucian's Resolve
The room fell silent again, but this time, there was a sense of unity in the air. Lucian's family stood together, stronger than ever. He was their leader now—though still young, still learning. He had no illusions about the war that was coming. No one in this room did.
But one thing was certain: the Thorne family would rise again.
And when they did, the Erebus family—along with every other power that thought itself untouchable—would fall.
Lucian stood tall, his bruises barely noticeable as the weight of his family's history and legacy settled on his shoulders.
"Prepare yourselves," Lucian said, his voice cold and commanding. "The time to reclaim what was stolen from us is near."
And with those words, he knew his destiny was set. The world would soon learn that the Thorne family had returned—and they were ready to take everything back.
