"I'm nervous. I don't want to go..." Jessica said, sighing.
"Why? It's the first day of your 12th class," Jennifer asked, placing Jessica's clothes on the table.
"I know, but It wasn't that I hated school—no, it was just that this year was different. New faces, new dynamics, and...
I said to myself. he was in my class now. Daniel. The guy who seemed to have that strange effect on everyone around him, especially girls.
"I don’t want to hear any of your excuses. Just get dressed and go to school," Jessica's mom said angrily, as she stormed out of the room.
"It's not like I have any issues with Daniel... Its just everytime when his voice echoed in the room, or his gaze flickered my way, my heart did a strange little flip. I didn't hate him. It was more complicated than that.I just can't concentrate on my studies because of him. I have to focus on my study to get good marks which let me get into Harvard. If I don't get enough marks, my parents are going to kill me for sure..." Jessica said, her voice trailing off in frustration.
She started getting ready, took her belongings, put them in the bag, and headed off to school.
"I'm going, Mom," she said while leaving the door.
"Don't go anywhere. Come straight home after school. You have to prepare for the upcoming exam," her mother said in a loud voice so she could hear it clearly.
"Yeah, like I have anyone to go anywhere with," she said in an uninterested tone while walking on the way to school.
As soon as she reached in front of her class, she saw Daniel and Olivia sitting in the back. Daniel was talking to his friend, while Olivia was sitting at the table, taking weird selfies and all."Why did they have to transfer to my class?" she said quietly while entering the classroom and sitting casually at the front.
Daniel noticed her and said, "Morning, genius," in a teasing tone.
He knows I'm the topper of the class from past few year...
My heart did skipped a bit but I tried to ignored him and started looking at the schedule on my phone.
He came and sat next to me to tease me.
"Hey... why did you ignore me, monitor?"
"I'm not interested in talking to you," I said, trying hard to avoid his piercing blue eyes that seemed to follow me relentlessly.
“Oh, but I thought we were going to be friends and you're going to help me with my studies now that we're in the same class,” he said, a playful smirk tugging at his lips..
I finally looked at him, and his shining blue eyes locked with mine. (Now I get why every girl falls for him the moment they make eye contact, I thought to myself.)
“Why… don’t you have someone else?” I said, glancing at his girlfriend, who was glaring at us, clearly not pleased to see him talking to me.
As soon as he tried to say anything, professor lee walked into the class, his voice commanding attention. “Settle down, everyone, please.”
He got up and went back to his seat.
"Ahh! Finally, he’s gone...” I muttered, exhaling deeply, my body relaxing now that the tension had lifted.
Professor Lee started talking about himself and giving us important things to remember.
He’s one of my favorite chemistry teachers. I always wanted him to be our chemistry teacher. His way of explaining things makes everything seem so much clearer—like he brings the subject to life.
*After finishing his sentence, Professor Lee’s focus shifted to the back, where Daniel was talking. (Daniel had been in his previous class as well.)
"Daniel, I think it’s time you start focusing on your academic books rather than reading novels and giggling with your friends if you want to get into a good university. You know what your scores have been lately," he said with concern in his voice.
"Yes, sir," Daniel nodded, responding in an agreeing tone.
"I think you should change your company now, and start working with our most talented student, Jessica," he said, pointing at me.
I was in complete shock and confusion, like, what just happened? Why did this have to happen? I just can’t tolerate him near me all the time.*
I turned back to see his reaction. He looked a little serious, as if he knew the teacher was right—his family had warned him they'd send him to boarding school if he didn’t pass this class this time. After a few moments, he finally said, "Okay, sir."
His girlfriend didn’t seem to like the idea of him sitting and studying with me all the time.
I didn’t know what was going through his mind or why he ended up agreeing, and I was shocked by his response.
"What?!"
"But sir, I also need to focus on my studies... I want to get into Harvard," I protested in a disagreeing tone.
"I don't want to hear any more about this. The conversation is over. You're going to sit with Jessica and start observing her study methods. And if I hear from any teacher that you’re changed you seat back again after my class, I'll be calling your parents," he said angrily.
Then, turning to me, he added in a softer tone, "And Jessica, you can focus on your studies as usual. Think of it as a chance to revising what you’re learning or what you've already learned."
Then he came and sat across from me, while Olivia glared at us angrily from behind.
The teacher didn’t say anything to her since she isn’t that bad at her studies, so they let her be.
Now I’m just counting down the minutes until school ends. Luckily, today is a half day, so at least I won’t have to put up with him for too long.
He’s staring at me out of the corner of his eye...
It’s not that I hate him; it’s just that I can’t control my feelings when he’s near me. I have to admit, the "Daniel effect" could affect anyone—especially girls—and I’m no exception, I thought to myself.
Since today is a half day, there are only two periods, so time passed by quickly.
I glanced over and saw him doodling some random stuff on the back of his notebook.
As soon as the school bell rang, Olivia popped up from behind, interrupting him just when he turn to me and was about to say something .
""Yeah, coming! Bye, Monitor, see you tomorrow," Daniel said, flashing a smile as he stood and walked toward the door.
I just nodded, wondering what he was about to say. Gathering my things, I left the classroom, my mind still racing about that fact.
I walked home, feeling a mix of confusion and curiosity. What was going on with me? And why did I feel like I couldn’t shake the effect he had on me?
