A gentle touch brushed across my forehead, pushing a stray strand of hair away from my face. I groaned, hugging my pillow tighter, feeling the world around me through a foggy haze. The bed was warm, inviting, and I was in no way ready to leave it. A soft laugh broke through the quiet, tugging me toward consciousness. That laugh...
" Y/n," a familiar voice whispered, low and teasing. I cracked one eye open, squinting against the faintest hint of morning light seeping through the blinds. Walker's face hovered inches from mine, his eyes bright even in the dim room. He looked far too awake for this ungodly hour, with a mischievous smirk on his face that I immediately wanted to wipe off...preferably by throwing a pillow at him. "Walker," I mumbled, my voice heavy with sleep. "It's four in the morning." I flopped my head back down, hoping he'd get the hint. "What could possibly be so important that it couldn't wait until the sun was actually, I don't know, up?"
He chuckled, leaning back slightly but not going away. "Trust me, it's gonna be worth it," he said, amusement lacing his voice. "Besides, you said you wanted to learn paddleboarding, remember?" "Yeah, but not at four in the morning," I groaned, rubbing my eyes. "Four in the afternoon would've worked just fine." "You're going to thank me," he replied, undeterred, standing up and offering me a hand. "Come on, wake up. It's beautiful out there. Just us, the water, the sunrise..." I sighed but sat up, brushing my tangled hair back. He was annoyingly persuasive when he wanted to be. "Fine, but if I fall asleep on the board and drown, it's on you." He flashed a grin, unaffected by my groggy attitude. "Deal. Now, go get ready, or we'll miss the best part." He nodded toward my dresser. "I'll grab a swimsuit for you while you wake up."
I staggered over to the bathroom, splashing my face with cold water to jolt myself awake. The sleep was still clinging to me, but the idea of the quiet lake, just the two of us, sounded kind of...perfect, actually. By the time I came back, Walker had found a bikini from my drawer, holding it up with a smug look. "Seriously?" I raised an eyebrow, taking it from him. "I hope you at least picked a cute one." "Only the best," he said with a wink, clearly pleased with himself.
I rolled my eyes, hiding a smile as I slipped it on, throwing a hoodie over it. We crept out of the cabin like two kids sneaking out past curfew, stifling laughter every time a floorboard creaked. Finally, we slipped outside, the early morning air cool and fresh, filling my lungs in a way that made me feel instantly awake.
The sky was a soft blend of lavender and pink, the first traces of dawn stretching over the water. The lake lay before us, still and glassy, perfectly reflecting the sky above. Everything was wrapped in a quiet calm, like the whole world was holding its breath."Wow," I whispered, hugging myself against the slight chill. Despite the cold, there was something almost magical about the stillness, like we'd stepped into our own little universe. Walker chuckled beside me, his own hoodie and sweats already coming off to reveal the swim trunks he had on underneath. I tried to play it cool, but my gaze flickered, just for a second, at the outline of his body in the dim light. My cheeks warmed slightly, and I forced myself to look away before he could catch me staring. "See something you like?" His teasing tone was unmistakable, and I felt my face heat up even more. "Please," I shot back, trying to keep my voice steady. "Just get in the water already." He laughed, extending a hand toward me. "Ready for your lesson?"
I glanced at his hand, hesitating for a second. "As ready as I'll ever be," I sighed, accepting it. His fingers closed around mine, warm and solid in the chilly air, sending a surprising jolt of warmth through me. He gave my hand a gentle tug, pulling me toward the water with a grin. "Come on, Y/n/n," he said softly, laughing as I grumbled. The water was icy as we waded in, the shock of it waking me up in an instant. But somehow, his hand in mine made it a little more bearable. When we were deep enough, Walker held the board steady, nodding for me to climb on. "Here, put your hand on my shoulder for balance," he instructed. I did as he said, placing a hand on his shoulder as I stepped up, his hand on my waist, steadying me as I found my balance on the board. His touch was careful, like he was afraid to hold on too tightly, but his fingers stayed warm and firm, grounding me. Once I was seated, he climbed up, making sure we were stable before giving the board a gentle push out toward the open water. The world felt so still around us, the only sound our quiet laughter as he taught me to paddle, his instructions light and easy, the kind of guidance that made me feel like I could actually do it.
After a while, he stopped paddling, letting us drift, when we finally sat down facing each other, straddling the board. I looked at him, sitting across from me, the early light casting a soft glow over his face. He was staring out over the lake, his expression unusually peaceful. "Okay," I admitted, a small smile tugging at my lips. "This was worth waking up for." He looked back at me, his face lighting up with that familiar smile. "Told you," he murmured, his voice quiet and warm. His gaze softened as he watched me, something unspoken flickering in his eyes. For a second, it felt like the whole world paused, the space between us filled with something new, something I hadn't felt with him before.
"Thanks for convincing me to come out here," I whispered, breaking the silence.
"Anytime," he replied, his voice so soft it was barely a whisper. He reached out, brushing a thumb across my cheek, the simple touch sending a shiver down my spine. His fingers lingered for a second, and I held my breath, not daring to move. It felt friendly enough, but I don't know...
The moment stretched, feeling oddly significant, until I finally looked away, laughing softly to lighten the mood. "Alright, that's enough sentiment for one morning," I teased, trying to hide the blush creeping up my cheeks. He laughed, leaning back on the board. "Right. Sentimentality isn't exactly your thing, is it?" I gasped, splashing him playfully. "Oh, please. I can be sentimental if I want to!"He laughed again, splashing me back, and the board wobbled dangerously. "Hey, careful!" I yelped, clinging to the edges as we teetered. "You're gonna make us—"
A wave came out of nowhere, and before I could finish, we both went tumbling off the board, splashing into the shallow water. I landed to the right of him, water streaming down my face as I blinked in shock. His laughter filled the air, his eyes crinkling as he at me. "Well, that didn't exactly go as planned," he said, his voice vibrating with laughter.
I froze, realizing just how close we were. My hands were grazing his hand and side ever so slightly, my face inches from his, and for a heartbeat, I forgot how to breathe. His laughter faded, and his gaze softened, holding mine with an intensity that made my heart race.
Finally, I pushed myself away from him, both of us drenched and breathless with laughter as we trudged back to shore. I felt a warmth spreading through me that had nothing to do with the sun finally peeking over the horizon. "So," he asked, nudging me playfully, "still think this was worth waking up for?" I rolled my eyes, trying to play it cool, but a smile tugged at my lips. "Maybe," I admitted. "Possibly. Probably."
The sun was higher now, casting a warm glow over everything as we spent the morning splashing around, joking, and laughing like we had no cares in the world. At one point, he found a piece of seaweed and chased me with it, laughing as I shrieked and tried to dodge him. Eventually, he caught me, wrapping his arms around me from behind, lifting me off my feet as I squirmed, unable to stop laughing. "Walker!" I gasped, laughter spilling out between breaths as he spun me around. He just held on tighter, his laughter echoing in my ear. And in that moment, wrapped up in his arms, feeling the warmth of his laughter, I realized there was nowhere else I'd rather be.
