Ringing. That was what Sunny's ears were doing. All the people in his life he loved and trusted, staring at him with cold, selfish eyes. Like a scared pack of lambs, offering a sacrifice to the wolf that was the rumored monster of Grenster woods. His own parents eyed him without a care, that it was needed, it was 'for the better', that's what they've always said. His own death was for the best? This single action had ruined Sunny's trust in the human race. It was the first time he truly realized how monstrous his species was. How fear could turn the kindest man into your worst enemy.
He was dragged away, by older men he'd once watched the handiwork of and idolized. Sunny had heard about sacrifices, but he'd just thought it was the bad of the village. Every single villager made it sound like every sacrifice was worse than the demon it was being offered to, except, now Sunny realized it was probable to assume they were made-up rumors to ease the guilt of the people. The guilt that ate away at the soul. The knowledge that they had banded together to give away one of their own just to save themselves. How cruel and selfish they were.
Sunny didn't struggle, his head holding limp in the men's grasp as he was dragged away. It was silent. No one wanted to speak, to acknowledge the boy. It'd just make it worse to put a title on him, to finalize their decision. A title on him was knowing that he had a name, knowing that he wasn't just a lamb to be offered, but a person with emotions and consciousness. This was why no one met his stinging eyes as he was taken away. It was better to leave him to go without being spoken to, people didn't feel as bad for an object's absence.
His title as a human was stripped in these final moments.
Except, it hurt. Sunny was going to die at the hands of the villagers, and they couldn't speak a word to him. It was as if all the time he'd been alive, all the connections he'd made, all the smiles he'd brought had all been for nothing. At the end of the world, he was treated like an animal to slaughter, a worthless creature that wasn't seen as human.
Yet gazes continued to dart away, collective thoughts of 'it was for the greater good' circulating. Sure, they could think that. Maybe the villagers would be able to sleep at night then.
