Dusty never wanted to lie to Shadow and say that he was his son and his mother had died while giving birth to him. But that was Alpine's final wish before she left the pack to find a place with endless sun and sand. Dusty knew Shadow knew he wasn't Dusty's son. They had nothing in common except their skill and loyalty to their pack.
The next morning Dusty woke to silence. Silence was one of the many things he dreaded. He went out of his den to find Shadow and one of the newborn cubs waiting for him. But Dusty saw no one else.
"What's going on?" Dusty asked.
"We have to go," Shadow responded and nodded his head towards a clearing where humans had giant machines digging and drilling at the ground. Dusty and Shadow ran as fast as they could into the forest, Shadow carrying the cub. A human with a long stick came behind them.
"Go, Shadow! Take the cub and go! I'll give you time!" Dusty stepped in front of Shadow.
"No! It'll kill you!" Shadow protested.
"Shadow, go!" Dusty pleaded as Shadow took off into the forest with the cub. Shadow heard the distant bang confirming his father's death. But Shadow didn't have time to grieve, he had to protect the cub. It didn't matter what happened to Shadow anymore, he just cared about the cub, and nothing else. Nothing else mattered.
The moons passed, and the cub, named Hope, was slowly growing up. The Shadow and Hope grew into an amazing pair, and lived their lives together. Shadow taught Hope how to survive, and Hope taught Shadow the things only children are able to know, the secrets that everyone has deep inside, but unknown to everyone, even themselves.
