Rishika's fingers danced nervously along the spine of the hospital handbook as she sat by her small apartment window, glancing at the sky. Her heart beat with a mixture of hope and anxiety that she couldn't shake off, no matter how many deep breaths she took.
Working in a hospital had always been her dream. Growing up, she'd seen the strength and comfort that good nurses and doctors could offer during even the darkest moments. Watching how they tended to the sick, the vulnerable, and even the lonely, Rishika had found her calling. She knew she could make a difference too. She knew she had what it took.
But dreams were funny things-always tantalizingly close yet just out of reach. For years, Rishika had struggled to find stable work. She'd bounced between odd jobs and part-time gigs, always hoping to make her way into the healthcare world. Yet every hospital position seemed to go to candidates with more experience or better connections. That's how the world worked, and Rishika was well aware of it. Still, she clung to her goal.
A loud knock on the door snapped her out of her thoughts. She looked up to see Riya, her best friend and source of boundless encouragement, barging in with a wide smile on her face.
"Guess what I brought," Riya sing-songed, holding up two mugs of steaming chai. She handed one to Rishika, who accepted it gratefully.
"Just what I needed," Rishika sighed, taking a comforting sip.
Riya plopped down beside her, her gaze softening as she took in the familiar worry in Rishika's eyes. "Alright, spill. What's got you so lost in thought today?"
Rishika sighed, fiddling with the rim of her mug. "It's this job interview at Carewell Hospital tomorrow. It feels... important, you know? Like this might finally be the one. But what if it isn't? What if it goes like all the others?"
"Hey," Riya's voice softened, and she placed a hand on Rishika's shoulder. "You're not just some random person applying for a job. You're Rishika-the girl who spent every Saturday volunteering at the clinic even when she didn't have a job. The girl who stayed up all night when Mrs. Chhabra was sick because no one else could stay with her. You've got the compassion and skills that anyone would be lucky to have."
Rishika smiled, grateful but still a little unsure. "Maybe. But it's just... getting harder to keep trying when I keep hitting walls."
"That's where this job is different," Riya said, her eyes bright. "You're not just going in blind this time. Sid got you this interview because he knows you're the right fit."
Sid had been a family friend of Rishika's for years, and a bit of a mentor when it came to her career. As an accomplished doctor and Shivaan's best friend, he was respected in the medical community, which is why it had been both surprising and heartening when he'd reached out to her about an open position at Carewell Hospital. According to Sid, it was for a new role-one focused on personal care for a high-profile patient.
"Sid knows his stuff," Riya continued, nudging Rishika. "If he's willing to vouch for you, it means you're more than qualified."
Rishika looked down at her cup, feeling the warmth seep through her fingers. "I just don't want to let him down. Or myself."
"You won't," Riya said confidently. "Plus, working in a hospital is practically made for you. Just think about it: You, in a crisp white coat, confidently walking through those hallways, helping people... it's practically written in the stars!"
Rishika laughed, the sound light and refreshing after the tension she'd been feeling. "Only you could make a hospital sound so glamorous, Riya."
"Well, someone's gotta remind you how amazing you are," Riya teased, taking a dramatic sip of her chai. "And anyway, if you ask me, this could be more than just a job. It could be the beginning of something... big."
"Like what?" Rishika asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Oh, I don't know," Riya said, winking playfully. "A new start, a fresh chapter. Maybe even some interesting people."
Rishika rolled her eyes. "Riya, you've been watching too many movies."
"Hey, I'm just saying! Life is funny sometimes. And from what I've heard about this place, Carewell isn't just any hospital. It's where people go when they need something extra-so maybe it's exactly the place where you're meant to be."
Rishika smiled at her friend's optimism, feeling a glimmer of excitement ignite in her chest. For a moment, she allowed herself to imagine it-walking through the grand hallways of Carewell, helping those who needed her, making a real difference.
It was the kind of life she'd always dreamed of. Maybe, just maybe, this job would finally be her ticket there.
"So, what are you going to wear tomorrow?" Riya asked, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Professional but approachable? Or something that says 'I'm here to conquer the world'?"
Rishika laughed, setting down her empty cup. "How about something that says 'please, just give me this job?'"
They both burst into laughter, the sound filling the small room with warmth. Rishika felt her worries slipping away, replaced by a newfound determination. Sid's belief in her, Riya's support, and her own years of hard work-maybe it was enough. Maybe, for the first time, she was enough.
The next morning, as Rishika carefully got dressed in her best interview outfit-a light blue blouse and a charcoal blazer that she hoped projected confidence-she took a deep breath and looked in the mirror.
"Alright, Rishika," she whispered to her reflection. "This is your time."
She grabbed her purse, her resume carefully tucked inside, and headed out the door with a heart full of hope and a mind focused on her goal. Riya had texted her a last-minute "You got this!" and she smiled, her friend's words echoing in her heart.
Stepping outside, she took in the crisp morning air, feeling her nerves settle. She was ready to tackle whatever lay ahead, to prove herself to Sid, to Riya, and most importantly, to herself.
With her mind set on the opportunity ahead, Rishika took her first confident steps toward Carewell Hospital, unaware of the journey that was just beginning-the journey that would not only test her resolve but would also lead her into the most unexpected chapter of her life.
