Chapter 1

6:30Am
That's what it read on my alarm clock when the loud, steady beeping woke me up out of my dreams. I also heard my brother's alarm, which meant he would shortly use the bathroom, but he is too slow, so I wanted to go before him.

Immediately, I rushed out. My room is closer to the bathroom, and as soon as his door opened, I ran. Noticing I was trying to get to the bathroom, he also tried to quickly get there.

To my fortune, I was faster, and I slammed the door straight in his face before locking it.

"Yah! I'm your older brother. I have the right to use it first!"

Fifteen minutes later...

"Gyeong-su ah.... See how fast I finished? That's how you should do it!"

Grinning at him teasingly, I walked off.

I changed into my school uniform, which was a plain dark gray skirt with a light blue blouse, a ribbon tie, an oversized knitted sweater that was beige, and black socks that reached just below my knees.

I put on my Nike shoes because I always wear them.

My brother's school uniform was completely different from mine, but my coach told us to wear our uniforms because we were going to meet the teachers of the school first to greet them, and maybe the principal would come to wish us luck, so we should look presentable and not come in sweatpants or anything.

Instead of a school bag, I packed my sports bag, which was light pink. It had many keychains, like Hello Kitty, kittens, little rabbits, and a small picture of my brother and me.

I packed my volleyball uniform, shoes, knee pads, and some stuff to put my hair up.

I quickly walked downstairs and greeted my mom.

"Good morning.... Do we still have leftover chicken from yesterday, or did you eat it all?"

"I told your appa that there was food for him because he had to work at night. I don't know if he left much, but go check if you want." There wasn't any chicken left, but there was a bowl of rice and egg.

"Eomma, can I have the rice?"

"Sure, go ahead...."

I took the bowl and grabbed a spoon before sitting down next to her.

I ate it all up, which I had plenty of because Gyeong-su was taking so much time, but we still had 20 minutes until we had to leave.

"Do you have work today, Eomma? Or do you think you can come watch my game? I know my friends' parents come to watch, so I thought maybe you could come too. I know Appa is working, but maybe you... could... come?"

I noticed her frown and her eyebrows furrowed.

"Don't remind me of work. I have to work until 1 p.m., so I won't come. Also, I have a night shift, so I think my rest is a little more important. Sorry, honey."

"No, it's okay. I'm sure everyone will need their favorite nurse."

"You are so optimistic. Being a nurse is nothing happy. Well, helping people is good, but they pay like hell. Be happy your father gets paid a decent amount so we can live here."

"I know. Sorry, I just wanted to ask...."

"I'm sorry, honey. I shouldn't have made it sound like that. But by now, you need to choose what you want to concentrate on. Volleyball won't get you money in the future because there are at least 100 girls in Korea as good as you, and I'm sure you don't want to end up like us."

"I know. I'll study more..."

"There, that's my girl! But I'm sure you'll do great today. Go win that game for us!"

Five minutes later, Gyeong-su came down, ate, and then we left for school.

I didn't know his friends were going to join us, but the once peaceful walk wasn't that peaceful anymore.

"Aish! Gyeong-su! Wait up!"

Why are they running? It's not like we are late anyway.

Soon, we all made it to school, and my brother showed me to the gym, where my coach and two other girls from my team were already waiting.

"Good morning!"

"Good morning, Junha."

We had training for the first two periods. We practiced games and also did simple throwing exercises.

Then we had a break and were allowed to go eat in the cafeteria. I had my own lunch, which was probably healthier than the canteen food and would give me good energy for the game. I sat with Gyeong-su, Cheong-San, and their friends. My other teammates already went back to the gym to eat, but I wanted to spend time with my brother because he was way more fun.

I was eating peacefully when suddenly I heard screaming and saw students trying to bite each other.

They were all bloodied and charged at everyone. Just as one charged at us, Gyeong-su pulled me away and tried to find a way out. We ran into the building where Gyeong-su led me to his classroom. I heard screaming everywhere and hissing from the weird-acting students.

We entered the classroom where a few others were already hiding. After they let us in, they closed the doors.

I looked around, trying to catch their name tags.

It said
Lee Nayeon, Jang Wu-Jin, Yang Dae-su, Yoon I-sak, Seo Hyo-ryeong, and a couple of others.

Some were definitely familiar as they were friends of Gyeong-su and visited us sometimes.

I also saw Joon-Yeong, who helped me study sometimes. He was really good at math, so he often helped me, for which I was grateful.

I hope the others are okay.
