Sloane Vidala stood at the kitchen counter, absently stirring her coffee, her mind a thousand miles away from the routine of her early morning. The apartment was quiet, except for the faint hum of traffic outside and the occasional clink of dishes. Atlanta felt different in the spring, lighter, almost as if the whole city was holding its breath, waiting for something.
Her friend Ezra, a wiry, perpetually unbothered soul, was sprawled on the couch, headphones in, absorbed in whatever podcast or playlist had him hooked that day. He was the kind of person who could stay in his own world for hours and not care to emerge. But today, Sloane had something to say.
"Ezra," she called, her voice breaking the quiet. "Guess what?"
He didn't look up. "I don't know. You're finally going to stop pretending you can't cook?"
She smirked, rolling her eyes as she leaned against the counter. "No. Billie Eilish is playing tonight. And I'm going."
The mention of Billie Eilish's name hung in the air between them like a spark waiting to ignite. Ezra finally glanced over; an eyebrow arched in mock disbelief. "Billie Eilish? Tonight? Sloane, you hate crowds."
"I don't hate crowds," she protested, though it was a weak defense. "I just... I've been thinking about it a lot, and I really want to go."
Ezra took off his headphones and sat up, giving her a curious, slightly skeptical look. "Seriously? You, who've spent the last five years avoiding anything that even remotely resembles a social event, are going to a Billie Eilish concert?"
"Yes," Sloane said firmly. "I'm going. I've been wanting to for so long, and if I don't do it now, I might never."
He grinned, tossing the headphones onto the coffee table. "Alright, alright. I don't get it, but I'm not stopping you. Are you going alone?"
Sloane hesitated for a moment. "I was thinking of going with you."
Ezra raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "With me? Oh, so now I'm your personal bodyguard?"
She laughed, her heart racing just a little. The idea of actually seeing Billie Eilish, of all people was almost too surreal to fathom. "Fine, be my bodyguard," she teased. "But you have to admit, it'll be kind of epic."
Ezra shrugged nonchalantly, though the glint of curiosity in his eyes betrayed his interest. "Sure, why not. I've never seen you this excited about something in ages. Just don't expect me to sing along to all the lyrics."
Sloane chuckled. "Deal."
