NOT TOO LONG BEFOREHAND !

"IF I WERE TO OPEN A CURTAIN IN THERE, HOW LONG WOULD YOU GIVE UNTIL YOU STARTED CHOKING ME?" Lilith piped, her voice low as her eyes focused on the door of the darkest room of their small shared apartment. It was filled with different slowly developing professional photos, all of the people they'd stalked for cash. It wasn't an honorable living, but it was the one they were good at.

"Don't even joke like that, Lils," Adam said, glancing over at the woman with a joking glare. He knew that she wouldn't do it, not when her developing photos would also be ruined. There was too much money in there, too many cases of those attempting to get dirt on their enemies.

"Seriously," Lilith crossed her arms as she leaned on the couch's arm, "you ever feel a bit creepy with all these?"

"Your side's bigger than mine." He was quick to retort, grabbing his camera and bringing it closer to the door, placing it on the nearby table. A hand itched his forehead, brushing lightly against his slightly grown-out dark hair, "And last time I remember, you're the one that got arrested—"

"Oh please," the woman sighed, rolling her eyes, "that wasn't fair. He planted it." Lilith's hands moved down to the fabric of the couch, her sleeves covering her hands as her fingers picked at the frayed stitches. It was practically falling apart.

Everything in their apartment, and the building surrounding it was. The floors weren't up to code—so rotted they sometimes sunk in beneath Lilith's thick boots when walking. The doors felt like you could knock them in with one good kick. The lights flickered and sometimes simply went out even when they got their rent in on time. They even had a window that wouldn't open. Still, that was helpful to drone out the loud train that crossed nearby practically every day.

He offered a shit-eating smile, standing in front of her, "So I've heard a million times." Adam reached past her, grabbing his jacket from the couch's arm before turning and walking towards the door.

"Blah blah." Lilith was quick to follow after him, grabbing the black camera strap that he had somehow forgotten before slipping out the door while simultaneously hiding the camera in her jacket so he couldn't see it. She shut the door behind them so he could lock it, "I cover my tracks. We both know this."

Adam gave her a look, stuffing the key into his signature light blue button-up's chest pocket, "Okay, Bruce Wayne."

"Maybe I am Batman!" She trailed behind him, passing their neighbor's doors that held jangly handles and slightly off-center peepholes, "And you could be my Robin. How cute." Adam only gave her a look. Deciding to be petty, she mimicked an innocent tone as she inquired, "Where's your camera?"

He'd need it. He was going for a job. They'd split at the door, so Lilith could go pick up some more needles. She'd sown all their curtains and some of their clothes and was in the process of making Adam's Christmas present.

Adam faltered in his steps, the floor creaking as all his weight stopped upon the wooden beam. It was a true tell of the craftsmanship and materials, as Adam was close to malnourished. It was a part of why the rent was so cheap, which was the only reason they could both stay there, "Didn't I grab it?"
