Aaradhya let out a sneeze, rubbing her nose as she sniffled. "Bas na yaar, kitna dantogi aap," she whined, snuggling into the blanket her sister had thrown over her. Rain was her favorite thing in the world, but it never failed to give her a cold.
"Daant khane layak kaam hi karti hai tu bas. Ek toh baarish mein bheeg ke aayi aur upar se AC chala kar baith gayi," Meera scolded, drying her hair with a hairdryer. Her little sister was a handful-she didn't even want to know how Aaradhya managed to live without her in the hostel.
Aaradhya let out another sneeze, interrupting Meera's thoughts.
"God bless you," Meera said with a sigh, continuing to dry her hair. "Baal dry ho gaye hain, tu ruk main tere liye kadha banake lati hoon." Meera set the dryer aside.
Aaradhya made a face. "Nahi yaar di, kadha mat banana, please! Wo bahut ganda lagta hai taste mein," she whined.
Meera narrowed her eyes. " baarish main bheegne se pehle sochna chahiye tha na yeh sab."
Aaradhya opened her mouth to protest, but Meera silenced her with a stern look. Meera zipped her lips; her elder sister was terrifying when she went into her "mamma bear" mode.
Once Meera left the room and Aaradhya leaned back into the warmth of the blanket, resigned to her fate.
Downstairs, Meera entered the kitchen and started preparing the kadha. Just then, her mother, Chhaya, walked in, her face etched with mild concern. "Kadha kyun bana rahi hai? Teri tabiyat toh theek hai na?" she asked, watching Meera gather ingredients.
Meera looked up and shook her head. "Main theek hoon, maa."
"Toh yeh kisi ke liye?" Chhaya asked, folding her arms.
Meera stirred the pot, her voice softening. "Aru ke liye. Use zukhaam hai."
Chhaya frowned. "Toh woh khud nahi bana sakti kya? Aate hi tujhe kaam pe laga deti hai," she muttered disapprovingly.
Meera looked at her mother."Maa, aap kya bol rahi ho.Woh beemar hai, isliye main uske liye kadha bana rahi hoon. Agar main beemar hoti, aap toh mere liye karti, na?"
Chhaya pursed her lips. "Par tu toh kisi servant ko bol sakti thi. Khud ko kyun takleef de rahi hai? Woh khud toh kuch karti nahi hai, aur tujhe hamesha kaam main laga deti hai," she muttered, bitterness creeping into her voice. "Panoti kahin ki."
