Fifteen seconds

Regina George had no fear, except one : dying.
But she knew that she had her whole life ahead of her, at least that's what she was telling herself. She was the Queen B, the most popular girl in school, she had friends and family who cared for her, a bunch of teenage girls ready to do anything to be like her. She had her whole life ahead of her... Until a bus hit her.
It lasted fifteen seconds, but for her it felt like so much longer. One second she was standing, and then the bus came. She saw herself lying on the ground. She saw all the students rushing to see if she was dead or not. She heard them screaming in horror, panicking, calling an ambulance. But all she could see was her own body lying in blood, not moving or breathing.
"Please," she whispered, "I don't want to die... someone save me, please."
Suddenly her surroundings got foggy and she heard whispers.
"It's time, Regina," she heard a voice say.
The young girl knew that it was Death coming for her. She couldn't see anyone, it seemed like the voice was coming from the fog, or from everywhere around her.
"Please," she begged, "I can't die now, it's too soon, I need more time..."
"It is not up to you."
"Please let me live," she cried.
"If I let you stay, you'll have to pay the price."
"Anything..." Regina whispered.
"Very well, your heart shall beat for ten more years but will never be the same. In ten years you will face your final trial."

Regina spent several weeks in the hospital. The days were filled with visits from doctors and nurses, and sometimes from her family and her two best friends, Karen and Gretchen. The nights were quiet but sleepless. It was either her pain keeping her awake, or her PTSD, at least that's what the therapist the hospital assigned her would say. Regina appreciated not having people coming in her room every two minutes, but she didn't really like being alone with her thoughts. Sometimes she would have this sensation she could not explain: her heart would start pounding, she would feel chills all over her body and hear the same whispers she heard when Death visited her.
After a few weeks, she was finally able to walk on her own, even though she was still tied to infusions and other medical devices. One night, she decided to take a walk around the hospital, just so she could get out of her room for a while. She was walking down a hallway when she felt drawn to a specific room. She didn't know why, but she couldn't help but get closer to it. Then she felt it again: her heart pounding, the chills, the whispers... She stopped, wondering what was in that room that made her feel this way. She thought that maybe she could find the answer of why she is feeling this way. Suddenly, she heard something ringing, the noise coming from the room. A man ran out, calling for help. A bunch of nurses came running, yelling "code blue". Regina watched them, trying to make sense out of all of this. After a minute the nurses silently came out of the room, and Regina heard the man that called for help crying. Then it hit her: someone just died.
The young girl was confused: why did this happen? Why was she drawn to a room where someone was about to pass? Did she kill them?
She noticed that the whispers were gone, but her heart was still pounding and she started hyperventilating. She didn't understand why it happened to her. She collapsed on the floor, her hands in her hands. She felt like everything was spinning around her. She screamed, and her infusion exploded and she heard some glass smashing in another room. A nurse ran to her to calm her down and help her get back to her room.
Regina did not sleep for the rest of the night. She kept thinking about what happened, before and after that patient's death. She figured that, whatever that sensation was, it must've been related to death. Since she's in a hospital, death is omnipresent.

The day she finally got discharged, she felt relieved. All she wanted was to be back to her normal life. But even in the comfort of her own home, she still felt like things would never go back to how they used to be.
In school, everyone was staring at her, students were either pitying her, or were still scared of her. Regina was grateful that Karen and Gretchen forgave her after everything she had done to them, and that they stayed with her and tried their best to act like everything was normal. They could sense that something has changed, but they still loved her anyway and just wanted to be there for her.

The night of the Spring Fling came. Regina accepted to go with Shane, she felt like she had to, that's what everyone expected from her. But what she really wanted was to spend the night with her friends, and make the most of it even if she still had her neck collar and that she was still on pain medication.
But Shane wanted more. He took Regina to an empty classroom, saying that he just wanted some quiet place to talk, and tried to kiss her.
"What are you doing?" she asked, gently pushing him away.
"What do you think I'm doing?" he asked, trying to kiss her again.
Regina tried to avoid him, which only resulted in a sharp pain in her neck.
"Shane, stop," she said, trying to hide her panic.
"What is wrong with you?" he yelled, "Why are you acting like a prude now?"
Regina scoffed and tried to walk out of the room, but the young man grabbed her arm.
"I'm not done with you," he said in a low voice.
"I said stop!" the blonde girl yelled.
One of the windows blew up, but Shane didn't let go of her arm.
"Let me go," Regina ordered.
"Not before I get what I want," Shane said, holding her tighter.
Regina's whole body started shaking.
"Let go," she repeated. She tried to push him away with her free hand, and without realizing it she made him fly across the room. He was now lying on the floor, looking at her with horror. She was hyperventilating, wondering what was happening. Then she felt the whole building trembling, and strong wind coming from the broken window. She felt so mad at Shane. She walked closer to him, the young man was shaking.
"Regina, what are you doing?" he asked in a shaky voice.
She did not have the answer to that question. She felt like her whole body was on fire and full of anger and hatred.
That's when she heard the voice she hasn't heard since her bus accident.
"Go on," it was saying, "finish him."
Regina froze.
"Do it. He deserves it."
She looked him in the eyes. He looked pathetic, but she didn't want to kill someone. She walked away, leaving him there, and went back to the dance.

When she walked in the gymnasium, she saw that everyone had stopped dancing and were whispering to each other. There was no music.
Karen and Gretchen ran to her.
"G!" Gretchen said, "Where were you? Thank god you're okay!"
"What happened?" Regina asked.
"You didn't feel it?" Karen asked, "the earthquake."
The blonde's heart skipped a bit. She took a deep breath to prevent her from panicking again.
"Can we go?" she asked her friends, "I'm tired."
