Tanjirou's POV
"CALL THE COPS!" I screamed, my voice breaking under the weight of my terror. The sound of the door slamming against the wall made me flinch, the vibration rattling through my body. Yuzu bolted toward the phone, her footsteps quick and desperate. Meanwhile, I stood frozen at the doorway, trembling like a brittle leaf caught in a violent storm.
I thought it was over.
I really, really thought the nightmare had ended. That he was gone for good. Even though they never found his body, I clung to that slim hope—prayed it was all behind us. But now, staring at the grotesque reminder left at my doorstep, that fragile hope shattered into a million jagged pieces.
Tears welled up in my eyes, blurring my vision. Memories surged forward, vivid and suffocating: his unsettling smile, the way his voice could shift from tender to terrifying in a heartbeat, and that obsessive, all-consuming gaze. My heart raced, pounding so hard it felt like it would burst from my chest.
The walls seemed to close in around me as I gasped for air. It felt like I was drowning, the weight of his presence suffocating me even though he wasn’t physically here. I gripped the doorframe, my knuckles white as I fought to ground myself.
Breathe, I told myself. Just breathe.
It was easier said than done, but somehow, I managed to suck in a deep, shuddering breath. My body still shook, my limbs numb, but I forced myself to step inside. The air in the house felt heavy and cold, even though the heat was on. Each step I took felt weighted, like I was dragging chains behind me.
“OFFICER SANEMI! SEND HIM AND BACKUP—NOW!” Yuzu’s voice echoed through the house as she screamed into the phone, her panic as raw as mine. I heard the clatter of the phone being slammed onto the table, and the sound snapped me back into the moment.
I made my way to the kitchen, my legs feeling like they could give out at any moment. Yuzu was standing by the counter, her hands trembling as she clutched the edge for support. Her face was pale, her expression a mix of fear and frustration.
“He’s really back,” I whispered, my voice breaking. Saying it out loud made it feel even more real, like the weight of the truth was finally crushing me.
Yuzu sighed heavily, dragging a hand through her hair. “Here we go again…” she muttered, her voice tinged with exhaustion.
Her words struck me like a blow to the chest. This wasn’t new. We’d been through this nightmare before, and we both knew what was coming. The sleepless nights. The constant looking over our shoulders. The inevitable bloodshed.
But this time, it felt worse. Darker. More suffocating.
