Spoilers: Ending of rdr2
The gang was in shambles. Their dreams together lost and scattered. People lost their minds and some found it within this chaos, seeing clearly into the lies that were once shared around a campfire with laughter.
Forced to choose sides when there wasn't a side to choose to begin with since they were as close a family. Money and greed was the end of them.
Arthur struggled with you despite being sick, ripping your repeater out of your hands that you so proudly held onto with a burning passion in your chest for revenge. "Listen to me!" His voice deep and serious, his expression harden and yet desperate for you to listen to him.
"You need to leave and don't look back. Abigail, Jack, and Sadie... they're all okay. They don't need you to protect them anymore," Arthur reassured you the best he could, coughing slightly, but his gaze never faltering, "I know! But I need to back and kill that son of a bitch Micah for what he did to this gang! This family!" You exlaimed, placing your hands on your repeater as his hand grabbed your wrist tightly, "I know you're angry, Y/n, So am I, but... I need you to get out of here. I don't want to see you get killed for some revenge over a man like Micah. I'll handle it."
Arthur never let go of your wrist, his hand firm, but not too tight to hurt you. He's the type of man that would rather die than hurt you. You stared back at him, your tight grip never leaving the repeater that he held. Your hands slowly began to tremble as the reality of the situation sunk in deeper, realizing that Arthur was doing his last act of a sacrifice to get all of the people he cared about out of there.
"I can't let you do it alone, Arthur."
"You're gonna have to, sweetheart."
Arthur's husky voice was low and gentle, his eyes looking into yours with reassurance. Your hands continued to tremble as you lightly tugged the gun from him, "Let me go with you, Arthur," You begged him which made his heart ache even more.
He sighed. "Listen to me. For once in the twenty years of knowing you, listen to me this time," Arthur demanded, his serious gaze and those beautiful blue eyes pierced your soul, "I know you're a capable and a strong woman, damn I know it, and I would do anything to ride with you for one last time, but one of us is going to have to keep the memories between us alive," His voice slightly shaking as he slowly shook his head, "And it sure as hell ain't going to be me... I'm already dying."
"I need you to live for me, Y/n. Live a good life that I couldn't give you sooner."
His sickness is killing him. You've noticed it more than the others. His plump cheeks and healthy glow to his face was gone, and you've watched it drain these past few months. He's gotten smaller and could barely hold his food down. You knew it hurt him a lot to eat, but he did it anyway.
Your hand dropped from the repeater as your firm hold was instead on Arthur's cheek. Arthur eyes flickered with surprise as you gently caressed his cheek with your warm hand, his heart slightly aching as he noticed the tears welled up in your eyes. You looked at him with deep sorrow and love for him causing the man to shake his head as he glanced off to the side, "Don't look at me like that..."
"Oh, Arthur..." You said sweetly, your voice filled with sadness as he looked to you with desperation, "Don't 'oh, Arthur' me neither, sweetheart. That's unfair."
You pulled him in closely, wrapping your arms around his shoulders as you hugged him tightly, not wanting to let him go. He returned the favour, dropping the repeater to the side as he fully wrapped his arms around your waist, burying his face into your shoulder as he inhaled your scent that he loved and grew accustomed to his entire life.
His biggest regret in life was not being able to give you a life you deserved with him. But he's still grateful that you've never left his side, not once.
Arthur held onto you desperately, his arms tightening around you almost every second. You slightly pulled away, taking his hat off his head as you leaned in and placed a loving kiss to his temple, using your free and as you placed it on the back of his head bringing him close to kiss his cheek. It was a goodbye kiss. He knew it as his chest burned with affection for you.
Arthur wanted to kiss you so badly, biting down on his lip as he painfully soaked in the kiss that you pressed against his cheek. Without knowing how tuberculosis is fully spread, after getting diagnosed, Arthur has been scared to kiss you incase it ever did spread to you.
"You're the best man I've ever known and the only man that I love," You mumbled against his skin as you fully pulled away from him, taking his hands in yours. "I love you, Arthur Morgan."
His thumbs ran over your knuckles, looking at you with deep affection as he brought your hand up to his lips, giving it a quick peck. "I love you, Y/n Morgan."
He might have not been able to make you his wife infront of God, but the both of knew that your souls will forever be married.
"Now, there isn't anymore time. Please get on out of here."
Arthur helped you onto your horse, placing your repeater into the horse's weapons holder. Your body settling into the saddle as you quickly reached for Arthur's hand. He accepted your gentle touch as he grabbed onto your single hand with the both of his reassuringly.
"I promise that I'll live for you, Arthur."
"I know you will, it's not like you to break your promises."
He smiled up at you, his tired eyes not matching his smile. As you returned the same loving smile to him, your hand gently squeezing his hands before slowly sliding out from their protective hold.
"Goodbye."
Arthur's arms dropped to his side, watching your horse gallop off into the distance, his eyes trained on your fast disappearing figure until it went over a small hill and to never been seen again.
He squeezed his hands that held yours just moments ago, remembering the gentle warmth that your hand brought him. The heartbreak and peace was replaced with determination and anger as he mounted his own horse, riding back to the beaver hollow camp where the rat was still cozy.
Arthur's will to live soon got lost during the fight.
And his last painful breathing moments as he stared off at the gentle golden sun, his thoughts were only filled of you, wondering if you got out safe.
