Chapter 2

I adjusted my backpack and tugged my scarf higher around my neck, feeling the biting chill of a November morning. I swear I hate this time of year, everyone has a cold and the winter has just begun. The leaves crunched beneath my boots as I moved along the tree-lined path that cut through campus. I originally loved the idea of a big campus but I swear the classes could have been a bit closer.

I was enjoying how nice and quiet it finally was, with no Harper yapping.

From a distance, I heard a familiar burst of loud laughter and shouts echoing down the path. Even before I turned to look, I knew exactly who it was. "Liv! Hey, Olivia!" Carter's deep voice called out, stopping me in my tracks, making me turn round.

Carter and Derek—loud, proud and cocky, both of them. But they were the sweetest guys you could find for a mile away.

Carter's voice was booming as always, his laugh rolling out like thunder, while Derek's usual teasing drawl was unmistakable. You could never spot one without the other, they were practically attached at the hip.

They were also two of the stars on the school's football team and they were always everywhere.

I looked over to see the group of them hanging out near the edge of the path, sprawled out on one of the stone benches. Derek and Carter, as usual, were in the middle of some over exaggerated story, complete with grand gestures and loud exclamations.

I managed to catch the word "disturbing" coming out of one of the guys mouths and I made a mental note to not ask what had happened.

Beside them was another familiar face, Josh, the team's defender and everyone's go-to guy for a study buddy during finals. He was also Harper's boyfriend.

The group of boys were never calm, damn, I don't think I know anyone who is more energetic than them.

"Morning, Liv!" Carter called out, drawling and lifting his cup of coffee my way. Oh god, I definitely didn't have time for this.

"Hi, Carter," I replied, smiling back as I shifted my bag to my other shoulder. "You guys look suspiciously awake for this beautiful morning."

Derek laughed, flashing me a wink. "Early practice, Liv. You know how it is. No rest for the wicked—or for champions."

"Champions?" I repeated, raising an eyebrow. "Pretty sure I heard you lost the last game by four goals."

Derek put a hand to his chest, looking offended. "Ouch, Liv. You really know how to hurt a guy, don't you?"

I rolled my eyes, but I couldn't help but laugh. Carter elbowed him in the side, and they both broke into laughter, shaking their heads. Josh, meanwhile, flashed me a grin and shrugged.

"How's Harper?" He asked, looking confused "never can get that girl to text me back." He muttered.

"Harpers, okay." I say but then I pity him. "She's playing hard to get." I whisper and the look of understanding reaches his eyes.

"Hey, no need to remind us of our crushing defeat," Carter said, smirking. "We've been sobbing about this all week."

"I even have pictures." Josh muttered. Earning himself a hard look from Carter.

"And if you send those to anyone." He grinned, tightly.

"Would never." Josh says lifting his hands in pure innocence. Though I know that the pictures will be travelling to the school in a matter of hours.

Derek was already sizing up my book bag like he was about to grab it and toss it across the hallway. "You're not lugging that around all day, are you?" He asked weakly.
