The day goes smoothly for Natsuko, Ryuji and her 2 friends. From the 10 a.m. break, they hung out together in the corridors around a cup of coffee for some and a cup of hot chocolate for others, telling each other about their vacations, their apprehensions about this morning's classes and the worries of their lives as high school students. They then had lunch together in the cafeteria, as they always do and the afternoon continued with Maths, English and Philosophy classes.
Ryuji, Natsuko, Leila and Nathaniel have known each other since elementary school. When Natsuko moved to France with her mother, she arrived in CM1, she was very quickly discriminated against by some of her classmates because of her Asian origins. Ryuji was the first to defend her and it is after this first day in this school that Natsuko learns from her mother that Ryuji is her cousin. Since then, they have always arrived at school together and no one has come to bother Natsuko anymore. She met Nathaniel and Leila shortly afterwards and since then, the quartet has become inseparable. After all these years, their friendship is still going strong and they love spending time together whenever they can. Especially when Seymour is on a business trip, the latter has never looked very favourably on his daughter-in-law's associations because Seymour believes that they are not good enough because they are not from the "same background". He tolerates Ryuji's presence since he is his cousin but he does not like him either.
At the end of class, around 4:30 p.m., Ryuji and Natsuko say goodbye to Leila and Nathaniel who have to go to their sports clubs and they both go their separate ways. Ryuji accompanies Natsuko to the front of her house. The latter looks up and looks at the second-floor window with a sigh. Leila told Ryuji what had happened this morning between Natsuko and her father-in-law.
- Do you think he'll be home when you get home ? asks Ryuji. - I don't know, I hope not. ‐ Hopefully your mother won't be too angry when she sees you at home. ‐ Yes... I hate arguing with her... I don't understand why she often defends him rather than mine. - Don't worry, you have to hold on until she dumps him.
Natsuko smiled softly.
- You know it's not likely to happen for a long time. - Oh, but you don't know, my dear cousin. - Sometimes karma comes faster than we think. - You definitely know how to cheer me up. - That's what cousins are for.
She finally arrives in front of the building. Natsuko looks at her cousin, she is very apprehensive about his return home.
- Do you want to spend a few minutes at home to greet my mother ? Natsuko offers him. - Yes, with pleasure. It's been a while since I've seen her.
Natsuko smiled at her cousin. Natsuko types the code on the door and they enter the building. They take the elevator and go up to the second floor before arriving in front of the door of the apartment. She takes a deep breath before taking out her keys and opening the door and they enter the apartment.
