Chapter 4: Reflections and Revelations
The days seemed to stretch on, each one filled with a new wave of emotions that Faisal hadn't quite expected. He'd been in and out of relationships before, but this—this was different. Sumayah was different. The pull he felt toward her was unlike anything he had ever known.
One quiet afternoon, Faisal sat alone in his room, looking out over the lush green of the Bida landscape. The sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon, casting an orange glow across the sky. His thoughts were, as usual, consumed by Sumayah.
Why does this feel so right? he wondered, leaning back in his chair. She's kind, smart, beautiful...
It was true. Despite their open conversations, Faisal had noticed an air of hesitation in Sumayah. She seemed to want more, but at the same time, she was afraid to dive deeper.
His phone buzzed on the table.
It was her again.
"Hi Faisal, I was just thinking of you. How are you doing today?"
He smiled, the simple message lighting up his heart. It was always the little things with Sumayah—those brief moments where she let him know she was thinking of him, too.
He quickly typed back, his fingers eager to reach her.
"Hey, Sumayah. I'm good, just thinking about you. How was your day? Busy, I bet."
As soon as he hit send, his mind wandered back to their last conversation. They'd agreed to take things slow, but he couldn't shake the feeling that he wanted more. That he wanted her to feel safe enough with him to let her guard down completely.
But how can I help her with that? Faisal thought. What's really holding her back?
At the same time, Sumayah sat on her bed, her phone in her hands, staring at the message Faisal had just sent. The weight of her thoughts pressed heavily on her chest.
What am I doing? she asked herself. Why am I holding back? He's everything I've ever wanted in a man—kind, thoughtful, strong. So why am I so afraid?
Her mind raced, the fears bubbling to the surface. She'd been hurt before, and though it wasn't something she often thought about, the past had left its mark.
It was when she was younger, just starting out in nursing school. She had met someone—someone who seemed perfect at first. He had swept her off her feet, showered her with affection, and made her feel like the center of his world.
But then came the lies, the secrecy, and the eventual betrayal. He had moved on with someone else, leaving Sumayah heartbroken and disillusioned.
Since then, she had built walls around her heart. She couldn't afford to let anyone in too easily, especially someone like Faisal—someone who could potentially break her even more.
But as she stared at the screen, typing out her reply to him, she couldn't ignore the growing warmth in her chest.
"My day was alright. Long as usual. But I'm glad to hear from you. I've been thinking about you, too."
As soon as she sent the message, she felt a rush of vulnerability. She had opened up just a little, but that was enough to make her anxious.
Why am I letting myself feel this way?
She couldn't deny the connection she felt with Faisal, the way he made her feel seen in a way no one ever had. But she also couldn't ignore the fear that gripped her every time she considered how much she might stand to lose.
Faisal's phone vibrated, and he saw her response. His heart skipped a beat as he read the words.
She's thinking about me, too. The realization felt like a small victory, but it was enough to bring a smile to his face.
He quickly typed back:
"I'm glad to hear that. I've been thinking about you a lot, too. I'm starting to wonder what it would be like to be with you... to get to know you even more."
The moment he hit send, a knot formed in his stomach. He hadn't meant to reveal that much. It was too soon. But the words felt right. He felt a genuine connection with her that he couldn't ignore.
Sumayah didn't respond right away, and for a moment, Faisal wondered if he'd made a mistake. Maybe I pushed too hard, too soon.
But then, her message came through.
"You don't know how much I want that, Faisal. But I'm scared. I've been hurt before, and I don't know if I'm ready to let someone in again. I don't want to repeat the same mistakes."
Faisal's heart ached as he read her words. He knew her hesitation came from a place of pain, and he understood. He could never truly know the extent of her past hurt, but he wanted to be the one who helped her heal.
He typed back gently, his voice calm but filled with sincerity.
"I understand, Sumayah. I'm not asking for anything you're not ready for. But I'm here, and I want you to know that I'm willing to wait, to take it slow if that's what you need. I don't want to rush you."
The next few moments felt like an eternity, the weight of the silence pressing in.
Finally, her response came.
"Thank you for understanding. I don't want to hurt you, Faisal. But I think I'm ready to see where this goes... one step at a time."
Faisal smiled, a sense of relief washing over him. One step at a time.
It was all they needed.
The next few days passed in a blend of hope and cautious optimism. Faisal and Sumayah continued to text, their conversations shifting from light-hearted banter to deeper exchanges. They spoke about their dreams, their fears, and everything in between.
As the relationship began to take shape, both of them still harbored their doubts, but something was different now. They were opening up, slowly but surely.
Faisal found himself looking forward to every message, every conversation, and every moment spent with Sumayah, even if it was through a screen. He wanted to be close to her, to prove to her that he was different from anyone who had hurt her in the past.
And Sumayah, despite her hesitations, found herself drawn to him in a way she couldn't explain. The walls around her heart were slowly crumbling, and she found herself willing to take a chance on this—on Faisal.
But as their connection deepened, little did they know, there were people watching, waiting, and ready to test the strength of what they were building.
