After being upstairs for a suspiciously long amount of time Elena finally joined Athena in the living room where she was talking to the police. Uncle John had already been taken away in an ambulance, Athena decline to ride with the man to the hospital. Elena explained the story she had come up with to the police officer, thanking whatever higher power that they had bought the fake story.
The Gilbert girls were now walking into the hospital to visit John and Caroline. Athena was there to see her best friend, she could care less about John, who would always make comments about how naïve she was as a child and how disappointing she was as a teenager, when she became the cliché dumb popular girl. He claimed that she needed to ditch Caroline and focus on her studies. Athena hadn't seen or heard from the man since her parents funeral but she was sure he had some strong opinions about her becoming a drug addict.
The woman at the nurses station pointed the sisters in the direction of Caroline's room, where they saw Matt sitting in the hallway with Bonnie. Both teens looked distraught.
"How is Caroline?" Athena questioned not bothering to even say hello before inquiring on the state of her best friend. The girls had grown apart during Athena's party faze, well it was mostly her pushing Caroline away, while the Forbes girl tried her best to be there for her friend from a distance.
As soon as Elena mentioned Caroline being hurt Athena needed to make sure she was okay. She felt extremely guilty for the months that she had pushed her closet friend away and instead chose to hang out with people who didn't care about her well being, they just cared if she had money to buy drugs. Athena was going to beg for Caroline's forgiveness as soon as she saw the girl.
"Athena?" Bonnie's eyes were wide as she looked at the teen. Everyone in town knew that she was sent to rehab. Elena hadn't mentioned her sister coming back so both Bonnie and Matt were shocked to see her standing in front of them looking healthier than she had the last time they saw her. Neither of them were super close to Athena being more of Elena's friends but they were glad to see that she looked good.
"She's not good." Matt sighed shaking his head.
"What happened?" Elena asked moving to place a hand on Matt's shoulder knowing how upset he must be with his girlfriend being hurt.
"We were driving and Tyler heard this noise and he got..."
"A noise?" Bonnie cut him off looking at Elena with raised brows like she knew something.
"He got this migraine or something and he lost control of the car and... I thought Caroline was fine and then... and then she wasn't so... " The boy trailed off, lowering his head into his hands. "She's weak. They don't know if she's going to make it."
"What?" Athena gasped her hand moving to cover her mouth. This couldn't be happening. She had just gotten home and now her best friend might die.
Everyone had tears in their eyes as they digested the news. Elena mumbled that she had to use the bathroom and pulled Bonnie with her, leaving Athena to fall into the now empty seat next to Matt.
