Arya stood still, her pulse hammering in her ears. The stranger was gone, but his words still echoed in her mind. She wasn’t stupid. She knew something was wrong. No one acted that way unless they had something to hide.

She glanced at the street corner, then back to the alley where he had disappeared. A part of her wanted to walk away, ignore it, pretend like it never happened. But that strange symbol on the notebook, the look in his eyes—it all tugged at something deep inside her, something she couldn’t shake.

Still, she wasn’t about to throw herself into whatever mess he was tangled in. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, snapping her out of her thoughts. It was Tyla.

“Where are you? You said you’d be home by 10.”

Arya sighed, typing a quick reply. “Sorry, I’m on my way. Something’s weird in the city tonight.”

She shoved her phone back into her pocket, but before she could leave, she heard footsteps again—closer this time. She wasn’t in the mood for more weirdness. She turned and started walking away, keeping her head down, but the sound grew louder.

And then she heard his voice.

“You’re not going to just walk away, are you?”

Arya froze. She didn’t have to look to know who it was.

“No,” she said coldly, turning around. “I’m not following you. I don’t even know you.”

The stranger emerged from the shadows, his gray eyes sharp. He had a look in them, like he knew something she didn’t, and it made her skin crawl.

“I don’t need you to follow me,” he said, his voice smooth. “But you’re already involved.”

Her stomach twisted. “What does that mean?”

He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he took a step closer, his gaze unwavering. Arya took a step back instinctively, but he didn’t move.

“The city is changing,” he said, his tone quieter, urgent. “And it’s going to drag you into something you won’t be able to escape.”

Her heart pounded, but her voice was steady. “I don’t want any part of your mess.”

The stranger gave a small, almost mocking smile. “Too late.”

With that, he turned and walked away, disappearing into the night as quickly as he had come.

Arya stood there, staring at the spot where he had been. She felt a sudden weight in the air, something ominous. He was right about one thing—she was already involved. But how? And why did she feel like she’d just made the biggest mistake of her life by letting him go
