Evangeline
I tap my fingers, in rhythm with the sound of the clock. It's Monday, 5:00 pm sharp. My sister should be home in any minute.
She doesn't come home this late often. If she does, she chats me first. I take a glance at the phone next to the silver utensils.
"When is she coming home... " I mumble, tapping my fingers faster.
The door is just in front of the kitchen and dining room. I zone out, still looking directly at the wooden door.
I shake my head, finally taking my phone from its position. I quickly dialed my sister's number and called her.
It was ringing. I stood up from the chair and started to walk around. I tap my feet on the ground repeatedly then- it ended.
"Damn! Mari... Why aren't you answering? " my eyebrows dropped to its inner corners.
I dial my sister's number again, then the door swings open. It was my younger sister. "Are you alright Mari?" I checks up on my younger sister, touching her forehead and neck to feel any symptoms.
"Yeah! I'm very healthy and fine! " Marianne smiles happily. Marianne looks around and smells the sweet fragrance. "What's for dinner Eva?"
"Fried chicken, and soup" I smiled. Marianne takes off her shoes and puts it back on the shelf. She puts the bag down on the light beige couch.
Both of me and Marianne sit on the chairs and started to pray.
"Dear Lord, thank you for this blessing. Bestow us upon your mercy. Thank you for giving us our daily bread and bless the hands that prepare them" Marianne and I prayed.
We both started to eat. I looks at my younger sister and smiled. "How was school? " I ask, cutting my chicken into a small piece.
Marianne still chewing on her food. "Oh uhm-" before she could respond. I stop her. "You shouldn't speak when eating Mari"
My younger sister nodded repeatedly and gulped her food. "It was so fun! We had so much fun during Physical Education! We ran around and played but I did trip and it caused a bruise. " Marianne just dismissed her bruise but I frowned my eyebrows.
"Did you go to the Nurse though? You know even if it's just a small bruise. It could cause you severe health issues, you know that right? " I touch my younger sister's hands. "You know how you are. But, are you really alright? Does it hurt anywhere? "
"Yeah I'm fine Eva, really! It doesn't hurt anywhere. "
My younger sister was born prematurely, some babies who are also born prematurely grow up to be normal. But my younger sister? She is very frail.
Whenever she was younger, she got bruises just being hit lightly or bumped into something lightly. That bruise she got from tripping? Could result in her aching every part for her body. Being bed sicken every time she gets a deep bruise.
"That's good Mari" I smile.
My phone started to ring. I wanted to press it off but I hesitated. I look at the name of the caller. 'Dr. John Smith'
"Who's that? " Marianne asks. "It's Doctor Smith, you know my colleague. "
Marianne suddenly became quiet. I look at her, Dr. Smith knows that today is my day off. "I'm sorry Mari, I just need to answer this, okay? "
"Yeah sure... "
"Everything is all about your work" she mumbled.
I groped tightly on my phone, I stood up from my chair and walked towards the living room and answered the phone call.
"Dr. Evangeline speaking, what's wrong Dr. Smith? " I ask.
"We need you hurry! " He yelled through the screen.
I frowned my eyebrows "What? Today is my day off, why should I go back to work? "
"Patient 47! He stabbed himself! "
"I shouldn't say this but, how is that related? You are there to help, why need me? " I ask again
"H-he is loosing amounts of blood and he doesn't want any staff to help him! He also attacked most of the staffs who helped him! " He yells. I never hear him yelling like this.
I gulped and looked back at my younger sister. "Fine, but can I have another day off? "
"You better ask the owner for that! Just please hurry! "
Dr. Smith ends the call.
"Hey uhm... Mari—"
"It's fine, you can go Eva. It's important for you to help other people" she giggles.
She smiles happily even if she's hurt by my actions. "Thanks Mari, I promise you, it'll get better" I smile at her before quickly taking my coat and my bag.
I put on my shoes. "I'll get going now Mari, bye" I smiled, waving goodbye at her.
She waves goodbye to me as I walk out the door. I shut the door behind me.
I started to car. The wind was blowing East, my put down hair and waving to the left.
"I hope it wouldn't be that bad... " I mumble to myself.
