It hasn’t even been 15 minutes of me sitting down for dinner when my phone started buzzing nonstop with Dev's calls.

At first, I dismissed it a few times, knowing our landlady is strict about table manners. But he kept calling, clearly not taking the hint.

Whereas my friends around the table began shooting me teasing glances, convinced it was some over-the-top romantic gesture.

But I know him better. If Dev’s calling like this, it has to be urgent. There’s no way he’d disrupt my evening over anything trivial, not after the argument we had recently.

With a polite excuse to our Madam, I got up from my seat, walked out to the hallway, and called him back.

He picked up on the first ring, and his voice was loud enough to startle me.

“Aadrika! Don’t you think this is crossing a line now?” he said, his words rushed and intense. “Sprinkles, I know we had an argument, and I gave you the space you needed to calm down. But now, what you’re doing—it’s completely inappropriate and unacceptable!”

His words struck me like a wave, leaving me both confused and worried.

“Dev, what are you even saying? Are you sleepy or something? I literally stepped away from dinner just because of you, and now...what did I even do to hear such a tone from you?” My voice came out sharper than intended, frustration seeping through.

“So?” he shot back. “What other way did you leave me to contact you after that message? You said you were leaving! Is it just because I suggested adding some security around you? Just because I cared about you? Just because I lo—”

“Dev, wait! Please.” I cut him off before he could say another word. “What message are we talking about? When did I ever say I was leaving because of our argument?” My voice softened as I tried to make sense of his reaction.

Silence fell on the line, and I could hear him take a long, shaky breath, almost as if he was trying to steady himself.

“Dev, are you okay?” I asked gently, worry creeping into my tone.

His voice softened, almost pleading. “Could you please explain the meaning of the last message you sent me? Please, Sprinkles.”

I recalled the last message I’d sent him, and it dawned on me that he’d completely misinterpreted it. Shaking my head at how quickly he’d jumped to conclusions, I began to explain, trying to keep my voice calm.

“Dev, it’s nothing like you’re imagining. The message… it was in a different context entirely.

Let me explain. Our teachers assigned me, along with a few others, to a field trip to gather primary data for an assignment.

But we needed the Dean’s approval, and I was worried. After the incident with Aanya, I thought my chances were slim.

For the past two days, I’d been stressing about it… but then, this evening, our Head of Department finally texted to say I’d been selected, along with 14 other students.
