So, there I was. Again. Standing in a literal shaking cavern, watching a unicorn and a kneazle abandon me like I was last year's broomstick catalog.
"Yeah, don't worry about me," I shouted after them. "I'll just deal with whatever fresh hell is coming all by myself!"
The unicorn didn't even glance back, and the kneazle? Oh, it had the audacity to pause, look at me, and chirp like, Good luck, sucker, before disappearing into the shadows.
The cavern walls groaned ominously, and chunks of crystal started falling from the ceiling.
Now, logic told me to run. To sprint after the kneazle and hope I didn't trip and die in the process.
But do I listen to logic? No. No, I don't.
Instead, I stood there, staring at the bubbling stream, because something shiny had caught my eye.
Yep. While the cavern was collapsing around me, my brain decided, Ooh, sparkly!
At the bottom of the stream, nestled between two glowing rocks, was what looked like a tiny, golden key. It shimmered in the light, and my first thought was, I bet that's important. My second thought was, I'm probably going to die trying to grab it.
The cavern shook again, more violently this time, and the stream splashed up onto the rocks. I had about three seconds to make a decision.
"Right," I muttered. "This is either going to be brilliant or really, really stupid."
Spoiler: it was stupid.
I dove into the stream, reaching for the key. The water was freezing, and the current was stronger than it looked, but I managed to grab the key just as another tremor sent me sprawling face-first into the stream.
"Brilliant," I spluttered, dragging myself out of the water and clutching the key like it was my lifeline. "Absolutely brilliant."
The moment I had the key in my hand, the cavern stopped shaking.
At first, I thought, Oh, great, maybe I fixed it!
And then the ground under my feet gave way.
"Oh, COME ON!" I screamed as I plummeted into the darkness.
I don't know how long I was falling, but it felt like an eternity. My stomach was somewhere near my ears, and my brain was screaming, This is it, Harry! This is how you die!
Then, out of nowhere, the fall stopped, and I landed with a bone-jarring thud on a pile of something soft and... squishy?
I groaned, rolling onto my back, and found myself staring up at a ceiling covered in glowing moss.
"Okay," I wheezed. "Still alive. That's a start."
The kneazle appeared beside me, looking as smug as ever.
"Oh, look who decided to show up," I snapped. "Nice of you to check on me after I fell to my almost-death."
The kneazle chirped and hopped onto the pile of squishy stuff, which I now realized was... mushrooms. Giant, glowing mushrooms.
Because of course it was.
I sat up, still clutching the golden key, and took a look around. The cavern I'd fallen into was smaller than the one above, but somehow even weirder. The walls were lined with more glowing crystals, and the air smelled faintly of peppermint and... cat fur?
"Okay," I said, standing up and brushing mushroom bits off my robes. "Where are we now, and why do I feel like this is going to get worse?"
The kneazle meowed and darted toward a narrow tunnel at the far end of the cavern.
"Oh, no," I said, backing away. "I am NOT going down another creepy tunnel. Not happening."
The kneazle stopped and turned to glare at me, its tail twitching.
"Don't give me that look," I said. "I've done enough stupid things for one day, thank you very much."
The kneazle hissed, and before I could react, it pounced on my shoe and sank its claws into the fabric.
"Ow! Okay, okay!" I yelped, hopping on one foot. "I'll go! Just let go of my shoe!"
Grumbling under my breath, I followed the kneazle into the tunnel, which was just wide enough for me to squeeze through without losing an ear.
"Why do I keep letting you drag me into these situations?" I muttered. "You're a menace, you know that? A menace."
The kneazle ignored me, trotting ahead like it owned the place.
The tunnel twisted and turned, and just when I was about to give up and start yelling for help, it opened up into another cavern.
This one was... different.
For starters, it was massive—easily the size of the Great Hall. The floor was covered in soft, mossy grass, and in the center of the room was a raised platform with an ornate pedestal.
On the pedestal sat a... book?
I approached the platform cautiously, half-expecting it to explode or start chanting in Parseltongue. The kneazle leapt onto the pedestal and pawed at the book, clearly wanting me to take it.
"Yeah, because that's gone so well for me in the past," I muttered.
Still, I couldn't just leave it there. Not after everything I'd been through to get here.
I climbed onto the platform and reached for the book. The moment my fingers touched the cover, a surge of magic shot through me, and the book snapped open.
"Okay, not terrifying at all," I said, stepping back.
The pages began to flip on their own, stopping on one covered in intricate runes and symbols I couldn't read.
"What is this?" I whispered, leaning closer.
The runes on the page began to glow, and a low hum filled the air. The kneazle chirped and jumped off the pedestal, clearly deciding it wanted no part of whatever was about to happen.
"Wait, where are you going?" I shouted after it.
Before I could follow, the runes exploded in a flash of blinding light, and I felt myself being yanked forward, like I was being pulled into the book itself.
"NOT AGAIN!" I screamed as the world around me dissolved into a swirl of light and color.
When I finally came to, I was lying in the middle of the Hufflepuff common room, the book clutched in my hands. The kneazle was sitting on the arm of a chair, licking its paw like nothing had happened.
"What," I croaked, "just happened?"
The kneazle chirped and hopped down, trotting off toward the dormitories like it hadn't just dragged me into yet another magical nightmare.
And me? I just lay there, staring at the ceiling and wondering if it was too late to transfer to Beauxbatons.
