Months passed, and Alaric's efforts began to bear fruit. Though he still lagged behind his peers in strength and skill, his unwavering resolve and quick thinking caught the attention of the senior knights-and Elesis herself.
During a routine patrol, the squad encountered a rogue group of mercenaries harassing a small settlement. Outnumbered, the knights hesitated, unsure of how to proceed. But Alaric, recalling the terror of his own village's plight, stepped forward with a plan.
"If we split into two groups, one can flank them from the east while the other creates a diversion," he suggested.
Elesis nodded. "A bold strategy, but it could work. I'll lead the flank. Alaric, you'll take the diversion team. Prove to me that you can lead."
Despite his nerves, Alaric accepted the responsibility. The plan was executed flawlessly, and the mercenaries were subdued without a single casualty. For the first time, Alaric felt the weight of leadership-and the pride that came with it.
After the battle, Elesis approached him, her expression unreadable. "You surprised me today, Alaric. You're starting to prove that you belong here."
"Thank you, Commander," he replied, his heart swelling with pride.
