As the war dragged on, the bond between Alaric and Elesis deepened. Though neither spoke of their feelings, their actions revealed what words could not. Elesis began to trust Alaric in ways she trusted no one else, and Alaric found himself willing to lay down his life for her.
One night, as they prepared for what could be their final battle, Alaric approached Elesis.
"Commander," he began hesitantly, "there's something I need to say."
Elesis turned to him, her crimson eyes softening. "What is it, Alaric?"
"I... I don't fight just for the empire anymore," he admitted. "I fight for you. Because I..." He hesitated, searching for the courage to continue. "Because I love you."
Elesis was silent for a long moment, her expression unreadable. Finally, she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "War leaves no room for love, Alaric. But if it did... you would have my heart."
