The silence was thick, almost oppressive, as Emma and Alex crouched in the dim hallway. The footsteps they had heard were drawing nearer, echoing off the damp walls. Emma's pulse quickened, and she took in a slow, steadying breath, tightening her grip on her weapon. They couldn't afford to be discovered, not here, not now. Her eyes darted to Alex, his gaze fixed intently on the corridor ahead, his expression calm but alert.
- We need to split up - Alex whispered, barely audible over the faint hum of machinery coming from the generator room. - I'll lead them away. You head back and get this intel to Harris.
- No way - Emma shook her head, her whisper fierce. - We stick together. There's too much at stake.
Alex's eyes softened for just a moment as he looked at her, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips.
- Emma, we can't risk both of us getting caught. You know that. Trust me, I'll be fine.
Emma clenched her jaw, her heart pounding at the thought of leaving him. But she knew Alex was right. They had to get the information out—they couldn't risk both of them being compromised. She nodded reluctantly, her eyes never leaving his.
- Just... be careful - she whispered.
- Always - Alex replied, giving her hand a quick squeeze before he moved away, his footsteps silent as he disappeared into the shadows.
Emma took a deep breath, forcing herself to stay focused. She turned and moved down the hallway in the opposite direction, her steps light and deliberate. Her mind was racing, but she couldn't let fear cloud her judgment. She had to get back to the team. The narrow staircase loomed ahead, and she moved towards it, her eyes darting around for any sign of movement.
Suddenly, a noise from behind made her freeze. She pressed herself against the wall, her heart pounding as she listened. The footsteps had changed direction—whoever it was, they were now following her. Emma bit her lip, her eyes narrowing as she glanced around, searching for an alternative route. There was no time to waste.
A door to her right was slightly ajar, and she slipped inside, closing it softly behind her. She found herself in a small, dimly lit room, the air stale and musty. Old crates were stacked against the walls, and a thick layer of dust covered the floor. Emma crouched behind one of the crates, her breath shallow as she listened. The footsteps drew closer, then stopped right outside the door. Emma held her breath, every muscle in her body tensed, ready for action.
The door creaked open, and a figure stepped inside. Emma could barely make out his silhouette in the dim light, but she could see enough to know he was armed. He moved slowly, his gaze sweeping the room. Emma's fingers tightened on her weapon, her mind racing with possible scenarios. If he found her, she'd have no choice but to engage—but she needed to avoid confrontation if possible.
The figure took another step forward, his attention focused on the opposite side of the room. Emma seized the opportunity. She moved silently, slipping out from behind the crate and making her way towards the door. Her heart pounded in her ears, but she kept her movements fluid, her steps light. She reached the door just as the man turned, his eyes widening in surprise.
- Hey! - he shouted, his voice echoing in the small space.
Emma didn't hesitate. She shoved the door open, slipping through and slamming it shut behind her. She sprinted down the hallway, her breath coming in quick gasps. The sound of pursuit followed her, heavy footsteps pounding against the concrete floor. She reached the staircase and took the steps two at a time, her legs burning with the effort.
As she reached the top, she glanced back, her eyes catching a glimpse of her pursuer just as he rounded the corner. She pushed herself harder, her mind focused solely on getting out and getting the intel to Harris. She burst through the door leading back into the main part of the building, the cooler air hitting her like a wave.
