I sat in my office that surrounded me in clear pristine windows looking over case files. I took a sip of my coffee that simmered as its warm liquid traveled throughout my body. making me relax at the tension and broad boredom that seemed to boar its fangs into my neck. it seemed to loosen its grip, though not entirely. I stretched my arm outward, seeking relief, but my mind was still restless.
I rubbed my shoulder trying to stretch out the stiffness for more comfort. stretching my neck in circles letting out a breath before yielding.
The stack of of papers before me seemed insurmountable. but all the more reason why this seemed more real. that I was somehow deeply connected with this profession. or as though it seemed..
I looked at the dull case file through my glasses squinting, trying to make sense of it. but this wasn't my type of tempo. wasn't my type of speed. I saw a shadow looming through the blurred glass door in the corner of my eye. a faint knocking sound muffled under their coughs.
"Come in "I shifted my gaze, still holding the file in one hand, my thumb tapping absently against the edge. Blinking for a minute I saw the door open revealing. Kyle, my assistant. his laminated gaze sharp and unrelenting.
Here," he said, his voice a perfect blend of authority and practicality . "This is for you. New case file. Idris Ahmad."
I grabbed the file swiftly, my fingers brushing the cool soft surface of the Manila folder Turning it around, I opened it without a second thought, slipping my glasses back onto my face as I flipped through the first few pages. The words jumped out at me
Idris Ahmad: Suspect for Brutal Murder.
Letting out a breath I didn't even know I was holding, I leaned back in my chair, trying to gather myself. Kyle stood in front of me, arms folded, his gaze steady and unwavering as he looked down at me. Also forgot to mention, he's waiting out front."
What?!" I exclaimed, my voice a mix of surprise and frustration. I huffed, squeezing the crevices of my nose in exasperation, feeling the tension building at the back of my skull. "This day couldn't get any more unpredictable...
Kyle didn't flinch at my reaction. His face remained calm, almost detached, like he was used to these kinds of situations.
He threw his hands up in a surrendering gesture, the motion sharp and exaggerated, before turning on his heel toward the door. He paused for a split second, patting the frame of the door as if mocking the situation, then smirked before disappearing behind the blurred clear glass
Adjusting my glasses, I turned away from the door and faced the large window that stretched across the far side of the room. The orange and white streaks of sunlight from the setting sun filtered through, casting long, slanted shadows across the floor. As the sun sank lower, the shadows deepened, stretching farther into the room with each passing minute.
