Chapter 3: Holly Jolly

I woke up on the sofa at Mikes house. El was already awake. "Morning." I say, groggily. She smiles at me. I sit up on the sofa and rubbed my eyes. "The lock." She says calmly. I look up at her. "What?" I asked. It couldn't have been me that did that. "Not.. me" She says, slowly, looking for the right words. I couldn't believe it, it was me? No way. It wasn't true. It couldn't be. I sat in thought for a while, lifted my sleeve and looked. The tattoo was fully visible now. I couldn't tell the others. No way. Then Mike, Lucas and Dustin all came running downstairs.

—TIME SKIP—

"We will tell our parents we have AV club after school. That will give us a few hours for operation Mirkwood." Mike says as El fiddles with the talkie. "Right, I'll get some batteries for the flashlights so they don't run out." I say while nodding. "We're out of batteries. Mom used the rest for my r2d2." Dustin said, he sounded guilty. "Are you serious?" I said with my hands on my face. "You seriously think that the weirdo knows where Will is?" Lucas asked. "Stop calling her that." I say, a protective tone in my voice. "Stop it. Just trust me." Mike says while he looks as the two of us. "Did you get the supplies?" He asks Lucas. "Yeah." Lucas picks up his bag and I turn to El. I go and sit down next to her. "You okay?" I ask her and she smiles and nods at me. "Thanks for not telling the others about what happened the other day." I say with a smile. She smiles back and fiddles with the walkie again. I get snapped out of the conversation by Lucas shouting "She shut one door." Dustin replies with a pretty good argument. "With her mind!" He shouts back. "She's not just a weapon." I say back to him, if I was in El's position right now, I wouldn't want to be treated like this. "I'm not saying she is... just imagine all the other cool stuff she could do." Dustin replies, he walks over to the side of the room and picks up a millennium falcon model and walks in front of El. "I bet that she could make this fly." He holds it out for her to see and starts talking to her like she's a dog. I put my head in my hands and she sees this and gets an idea. "Hey, okay concentrate, okay?" He drops the model and it hits the floor. I try not to laugh as he picks it back up. "One more time, use your powers, okay?" He drops it again and it hits the floor. By this point my face is red from trying not to laugh and I lean back on the couch. The urge to laugh goes away and I clear my throat. "You were saying?" I joke and he shakes his head and walks back to Mike and Lucas.

I turn to El and hold out my hand for her to fist bump. She looks at it and back at me. "It's a fist bump. You do it when someone does or says something cool." I explain. She smiles and holds out her hand in a fist like mine. I fist bump her and smile. "Boys time for school." Mrs Wheeler shouts from upstairs. I grab my jacket and put it on. Lucas and Dustin run upstairs and Mike goes over to El. "Stay down here. Don't make any noise and don't leave." He starts to explain. "I'll see you outside." I say to Mike and he nods. "Bye, El." I say as I run upstairs. "Bye." She responds, softly.

I pick up my bike and sit on it, my walkman tied to the handlebars. I put my headphones on and play the music. I got the walkman last christmas and Jonathan, Wills brother gave me a mixtape for it. It's totally rad.

—TIME SKIP—

It was lunch and we were all looking for rocks to use on the wrist rocket. "How about this one?" Mike asked as he ran over to Dustin. "Too big for the sling." He said looking at the rock. "Hey, do you think Eleven was born with her powers like the X-men or do you think she acquired them like green lantern." Dustin asked while picking up rocks off of the ground. "She's not a superhero, she's a weirdo." Lucas said. "She's not a weirdo. If I had powers would I be weirdo?" I asked him, hopefully getting some confidence to tell them that I also had powers. "If you love her so much why don't you marry her?" Lucas makes fun of me. "Shut up, douche." I say, shrugging him off. Lucas doesn't stop though he carries on making fun of me "You look at her all like. Hi El, El, El. I love you so much." Lucas gets down on one knee. "Would you marry me?" I push him back. "Shut up, Lucas." The others were laughing and I admit it was pretty funny until Troy and his pet monkey came up. "Yeah, shut up, Lucas." He says as he walks closer. We all look at him and I think about how much I want to use my powers to scrunch him into a tiny little ball and throw him away. I don't though. "What're you losers doing back here?" He asks slowly walking towards us. "What is it to you?" I ask him, slowly walking towards him too. I don't know what came over me either I was just annoyed at how long he had been bullying us or I had new confidence knowing that I could launch him back into the fence hard enough to break his bones. "What's up? You angry over your missing friend?" Troy says in a high voice, obviously making fun of Will. "That's not funny." Dustin says. "Yeah that's not funny you dick." I say, my anger taking over me. Troy looked at me, anger filled his face as me punched me right in the eye and clipping my nose. I fell back to the floor and held my nose, my eye watering. "I hate to break it to you but he's dead. That's what my dad says, said he was probably killed by some other queer." Him and his douche of a friend laugh. Mike comes down beside me and helps me up, my nose has began bleeding pretty bad and my eye was bruising. "Oh shit." Lucas says, covering his mouth. Dustin picked up another rock to lighten the mood. "How about this one?" He says, smiling. We all nod and I start laughing even though it hurts my face. Lucas nods giddily "Yeah, monster killer." We all nod and carry on looking for more rocks. I wipe the blood from my nose and join them.

—TIME SKIP—

It was after school and we were riding our bikes to the power lines outside of Mikes house. "El." he said as we walked up the hill. "You okay?" I asked her. She nodded and I turned my bike around to let her sit on it. She got on and I sat on it and looked back to her. "You sure you okay?" I asked, she nodded. "Promise." I handed her the headphones and she put them on. "Music, it's cool. Here listen." I pressed play and began riding my bike towards the train tracks. She put her hands around me and leant on my back. I blushed but tried to hide it.

—TIME SKIP—

"Why did they hurt you?" El asked me as we walked along the train tracks. "What?" I asked and looked up at her. She pointed at me eye and I touched it. It hurt and it had gotten bigger since last time. "Oh, that... uh I got hit in gym class." I said, obviously lying as I stumbled over my words. "Y/n, friends tell the truth." She said, knowing I was lying. I sighed and looked forwards "I was punched by this dickwad, Troy, okay?" El looked up at me "Dickwad?" She asked, she sounded really confused. "Yeah, you know, someone you don't like, kinda like an idiot." I said doing my best to explain but if i'm being honest even I didn't know what it meant. "I don't know why I lied. I just didn't want you to think I was some kind of loser or a freak." El looked at me, it was kind of reassuring and made me happy. "Y/n, I understand." She nodded her head as she talked l. "Okay, cool." I nodded awkwardly. She smiled at me and I smiled back, trying my best not to make an idiot of myself.

—TIME SKIP—

We had been walking for ages now and we were walking along a path, surrounded by fields. El stopped at the end of the path and I looked over. "Here." She said. It was Wills house, he couldn't be here. "Yeah, this is where Will lives." Mike said, his eyebrows furrowed. "Hiding." El said. "No, no. This is where he lives! He's missing from here!" He started to pace back and forth. "Calm down." I said to him and walked up to El. I put a hand on her shoulder. "He can't be here, this is the first place that they checked." I said, trying to ease the tension. A tear formed in her eyes and I instantly felt bad. "He's hiding." She said as her tear slid down her cheek. "What are we doing here?" Lucas asked and swung his arms up next to him. "She said he's hiding here." Mike said in a mean tone. "Umm, no!" Lucas added. He looked angry. "I swear if we walked all the way out here for nothing." Dustin said. Lucas started swinging his arms about in a fit of anger. "That's exactly what we did! I told you she didn't know what the hell she was talking about!" He screamed. "Lucas! Shut the hell up! She knows what she's doing!" I shout back at him. We start arguing and I push his shoulders and he pushed me back. We were about to start fighting when Dustin shouted from next to us. "Guys!" His voice echoed. We walked to where Dustin was and looked out... sirens. Police. Ambulance. You name it, it was there. We all ran to our bikes with the same thought in mind... Will. El got on the back of my bike and we pedalled as fast as we could. My legs were burning and I felt tired but for the hope that Will was there I kept on going. We reached where they had gone and hid behind an ambulance watching the scene unfold in front of us. They were surrounding the quarry, flashlights out. There were tons of people and it was hard to see what it was. They pulled a body out of the water. The body was wearing a red and white vest and jeans. "It's...no." I said, my eyes began to water. I turned around and leant against the back of the ambulance. El grabbed my shoulder and a tear dropped down her cheek. "It's really Will." Lucas said as he turned to the back of the ambulance, the others following him. Mike leant his hand on the back of the ambulance. El walked over to him and put her hand on his shoulder. "Mike." She said. Mike slapped her hand out of the way. "Come on, Mike. Don't start this. Not now." I said between sobs, my face now cold and numb from the tears on my face. "She was supposed to help us find Will alive! You said he was alive!" Mike shouts at her his eyes watering too. Lucas and Dustin were stood behind me, I could hear them crying. El looked scared and she was crying too. "Why did you lie to us! What's wrong with you! What is wrong with you!" Mike shouted at her. "Mike.." I said taking a step towards him, tears dripping off of my face. Mike looked at me and walked towards his bike and got on, riding off. "Mike come on don't do this, man." Lucas said, his tears sliding down his face. "Mike, don't!" I shouted but that didn't stop him. El was sobbing, thinking she had done something wrong. I wrapped my arm around her back and hugged her. I felt bad for crying on her but it felt good to have someone to actually hug you.
