The moment Celine stepped closer, Ariana could feel the weight of her presence. The air around them seemed to thrum with an unfamiliar energy, making her heart race. Dorian's protective stance was the only thing keeping her grounded, but she knew—something dangerous was in motion.
Celine's smile never wavered as she eyed Ariana, her violet gaze flickering over the runes on her wrists. Ariana instinctively pulled her hands back, hiding the symbols beneath her sleeves, but Celine's gaze never left her.
"You're very cautious, Ariana," Celine said, her voice a melody laced with threat. "And yet, you have no idea what you're about to awaken."
Ariana clenched her fists, the glow of the runes fading beneath her skin as she stood taller. "What do you want?"
Celine's smirk deepened. "What do I want?" She laughed softly, the sound echoing through the clearing. "What do you think I want? The Gateways, of course. The power they hold... It's beyond anything you can imagine."
Dorian shifted in front of Ariana, his body tensing. "I told you not to listen to her," he snapped. "She's not here to help you, Ariana. Celine has her own agenda, and it doesn't involve your well-being."
Ariana's eyes narrowed. "Then why are you here? If you know what's going on, why don't you just tell me everything?"
Celine tilted her head, amusement flickering in her gaze. "Ah, so much curiosity. You're not like the others, are you? Always asking questions, digging deeper. It's what makes you dangerous, Ariana."
Ariana's chest tightened. "Why? What makes me so special?"
For a moment, Celine's expression softened, almost wistful. "You're the 'lost key,' Ariana. You're the one who can unlock what others cannot. And the Gateways... they're waiting for you. All you have to do is reach out, let them in."
Dorian's voice cut through the air, sharp and forceful. "Don't listen to her! She's using you. She wants you to open the Gateways, but for her own gain."
Ariana's mind whirled with the implications of Celine's words. The lost key? She had been told that her power was connected to the Gateways, but this was the first time someone had said it so directly. Unlock what others cannot. But why her? What was it about Ariana that made her the key?
"You're wrong," Ariana said, her voice firm. "I don't even understand what this power is. Why would I just give it to someone like you?"
Celine's expression hardened, the playful glint fading from her eyes. "Because if you don't, the consequences will be far worse than you realize. The Gateways are opening, Ariana. There's no stopping it. You can either take control of your fate... or let someone else decide it for you."
Ariana felt a chill sweep through her. She glanced at Dorian, searching his face for answers. His jaw was set, his hands clenched at his sides, but there was a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes.
Dorian spoke again, his voice low and urgent. "Ariana, don't let her manipulate you. You don't know what she's capable of."
Celine chuckled, a low, rich sound that sent a shiver down Ariana's spine. "Oh, Dorian. You always were the idealist. Do you think she'll just walk away from this? Do you think you can protect her from the truth?"
The words echoed in the air, and Ariana's heart skipped a beat. She didn't know what to believe anymore. But one thing was clear—Celine's presence was no accident. She was part of something bigger. And if Ariana didn't figure out what that was, she would be caught in a storm of forces far beyond her control.
"Why are you doing this?" Ariana asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Why are you after me?"
Celine's gaze softened, and she took a step closer, her eyes never leaving Ariana's. "Because you're more than just a key, Ariana. You're a doorway. A chance to rewrite the rules, to change everything. The Gateways are meant to be opened, but only by someone who can hold the power, someone who can make the right choices."
Ariana's stomach twisted. "And you think that's me?"
Celine smiled again, but this time, it was cold, calculating. "I don't think. I know. And you'll come to understand it soon enough. Whether you choose to accept it or not."
Before Ariana could respond, Celine turned on her heel and began walking away, her cloak flowing behind her like a shadow. "But remember this, Ariana," she called over her shoulder. "You can't hide from your destiny. The Gateways will find you. And when they do, you'll need to decide who to trust."
As the figure disappeared into the trees, Ariana stood frozen, her mind racing. The weight of Celine's words settled over her like a dark cloud. A doorway. Rewrite the rules. Make the right choices. What did it all mean?
Dorian moved to stand beside her, his presence a quiet reassurance. He didn't say anything at first, just stood there, watching the place where Celine had vanished into the woods.
Finally, Ariana spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "She's right, isn't she? I don't have any choice in this."
Dorian exhaled, turning to face her. His eyes were soft, but there was a grim determination there. "You always have a choice, Ariana. But there's a price for everything. And Celine? She's not someone you want to align yourself with."
Ariana nodded slowly, her mind reeling with what had just happened. She had come to terms with the fact that her life was forever changed, but now—now there was something much darker in the mix.
"The Gateways are opening," Dorian continued, his voice low. "And we need to figure out how to control them before someone else does."
Ariana looked down at her wrists, the runes glowing faintly. She had no idea what was ahead, but one thing was certain: the path she was on would lead her to places she couldn't have imagined.
The training, the power, the mysteries—it was all just the beginning. And now, with Celine's words haunting her, Ariana knew that the stakes were higher than ever.
