The next day flew by in a blur, yet Jae-i's sudden return and the noticeable distance between her and Kim Rian sent ripples through their social circles. Though Mi-hee wasn’t one to indulge in gossip, the whispers about Kang Ha's audacity also caught her attention.

Mi-hee preferred to avoid giving Kang Ha much thought, but she couldn't deny the man was dangerous. Her father—more of a father in appearance than in essence—had limited tolerance, and with her goal so close, upsetting him was out of the question.

Thus, she found herself perched reluctantly at the bar, absently swirling a glass of water, pretending to enjoy herself while mentally willing the night to end.

Across the room, Kang Ha sat among the infamous "Red Ties," playing a game of spin the bottle. The sight unsettled her. She was certain Kang Ha had an ulterior motive, but his exact intentions eluded her.

Why was he so intent on entangling himself with Jae-i?

Mi-hee knew of Kang Ha’s brother, who had died in a car accident. She had been close to discovering the identity of the mysterious woman who was behind the wheel that night, but a call from her father had startled the culprit into fleeing, disappearing into the night before Mi-hee could act.

The party, to Mi-hee's dismay, turned out to be dull. She had expected Kang Ha to make some calculated move, but he seemed as clueless as ever. The wasted evening left her irritated; she could have been at home enjoying a peaceful night’s sleep instead of watching a fool stumble through shallow games.

As she rose to leave, Kang Ha followed suit. His drunken gait betrayed his disorientation as he weaved through the crowd, seemingly in search of someone. The Red Ties trailed behind him, their faces alight with amusement.

It’s probably a dare, Mi-hee surmised. Against her better judgment, she followed them, curiosity piqued.

What she witnessed next made her pause in disbelief. Kang Ha, in a brazen act, kissed Jae-i—right in front of Kim Rian.

Well, tomorrow’s going to be interesting, Mi-hee thought with a wry smile. Satisfied that her night hadn’t been a complete waste, she left the party and stepped into the cool embrace of the night.

“Don’t come home tonight. Your father is furious that you missed dinner again,” her mother’s sharp tone cut through the quiet of the early hours.

Mi-hee wasn’t surprised.

It was past 2 a.m., yet her family seemed entirely indifferent to her being out alone at such an hour. The deserted streets stretched before her, cloaked in an eerie silence that was soon disrupted by the roar of a motorcycle.

The bike came to a screeching halt in front of her. The rider, a man likely in his late twenties, dismounted and approached her with an air of confidence that reeked of arrogance.

“Hey, baby girl,” he drawled, his voice thick with unwelcome intent as his gaze lingered on the exposed parts of her body.

Mi-hee’s expression hardened in distaste. The audacity of men like him never failed to disgust her.

“What’s a pretty thing like you doing out here all alone?” he leered, the grin on his face as predictable as his clichéd words.

Mi-hee smirked, her eyes sharp and unbothered. “Waiting for prey,” she replied coolly.

Her unexpected response made him hesitate, his confidence faltering. Men like him were all bravado—strip them of validation, and they shriveled like paper in flame.

The tense exchange was interrupted by the glare of approaching headlights. A car rolled to a stop beside them, and Mi-hee's breath hitched in surprise as the last person she expected stepped out.

Kim Rian.
