The city was on fire.

Glass rained down from shattered skyscrapers, glittering like cursed stars in the smoky twilight. The streets of Avalon City, once bursting with life and commerce, were now choked with chaos. A car, its windows blown out, sat abandoned in the middle of an intersection. A child's stuffed bear lay in a puddle of ash-laden water, forgotten in the scramble to flee. Overhead, neon signs flickered faintly—ads for luxury condos and impossible dreams—before collapsing into the rubble below.

Above it all, a figure hovered in the ashen sky, casting a long shadow over the ruins.

Omega Man.

His black suit glinted faintly in the dim light, the glowing Ω on his chest burning like an accusation. Around him, the air trembled, crackling with arcs of electricity that leapt between his fingers. His voice, amplified by power and anger, cut through the wails and sirens below.

"This city is rotting!" he bellowed, his tone somewhere between sermon and condemnation. "Its skyscrapers pierce the sky, built on the bones of the weak. Its leaders bask in decadence while children starve on its streets. Look around you—this is the system you defend!"

His eyes flicked downward, catching sight of a luxury tower still standing tall among the devastation. The top floors were lined with gold-tinted windows. A symbol of the wealth and power that had eluded so many below. Omega Man clenched his fists, and the arcs of energy spiraled into a furious vortex around him.

"No more," he growled.

A surge of light erupted from his hands, slamming into the base of the tower. The explosion sent debris cascading like rain, and the structure groaned before tipping, its golden crown shattering as it struck the ground. Dust and smoke billowed upward, joining the haze that had swallowed the once-proud city.

Then came the voice.

"Okay, we get it. You're angry. Loud and clear."

Omega Man's gaze snapped toward the sound. From the chaos below, a figure emerged, stepping lightly over shattered glass and buckled concrete. She wore a simple white dress, somehow untouched by the grime and soot around her. Her ponytail of silver-white hair swayed as she walked, her milky eyes serene and unblinking.

"Who dares—" Omega Man began, but the woman cut him off with a raised hand.

"Spare me the theatrics," she said, her voice cool and effortless, as if they were old acquaintances chatting over coffee. "You're Omega Man, right? The big bad who tears down cities to make a point?"

Omega Man descended slowly, his boots crunching against the rubble-strewn ground. Up close, he loomed over her like an executioner. "You speak as though you understand my cause," he said, his tone dripping with disdain. "But you cannot. You cannot know what it means to watch children sleep in alleys while the rich grow fat on their misery."

Beatrice tilted her head, her expression almost curious. "You think you're the only one who's noticed that?" she asked, gesturing lazily at the ruined skyline. "I mean, look at this place. Luxury towers next to slums. Ads for private islands while people dig through trash. You're not wrong about the problem."

Omega Man blinked, caught off-guard by her blunt agreement. "Then why stand in my way?" he demanded. "Why protect this—this monument to apathy?"

"Protect it?" Beatrice's lips quirked into a faint smile, more amused than angry. "No, I'm just here to stop you from making it worse."

"Worse?!" His fists crackled with energy. "I am tearing down their symbols of greed! Breaking the chains of—"

"Chains? Really?" Beatrice interrupted, her voice dry, as though she’d heard this speech a thousand times. "Look, big guy, I'm sure you mean well, but your 'reckoning' doesn't exactly scream nuanced reform. What happens after you blow it all up? You think the people in those slums are gonna magically have better lives tomorrow?"

Omega Man faltered for a split second. "I... I'm starting something," he said, though the words sounded hollow, even to him. "A revolution."

"A revolution?" Beatrice repeated, raising an eyebrow. "What, by leveling buildings? Killing the very people you claim to care about? Or is the plan just to knock over enough towers until someone figures out what you're angry about?"

"I—" he started, but her gaze had turned sharp. "Look, Omega Man. Really look. All you're doing is creating more ashes for the rich to rebuild on. You're not changing anything." Her voice softened, her tone almost pitying. "You're just another hammer swinging wildly at things you don't like."

The flicker of doubt in his eyes was gone in an instant, replaced by fury. "Enough! You think your words will stop me?" he roared, unleashing a beam of crackling energy toward her.

The blast ripped through the ground, sending waves of debris flying. When the dust cleared, Beatrice stood exactly where she had been, untouched. She held a small branch in her hand, the tip blackened and smoking. She inspected it, then shrugged.

"Huh," she muttered, brushing ash off her dress. "You owe me a new marshmallow stick."

Omega Man's face contorted with rage. He lunged at her, fist glowing, but she didn't move. She simply raised her hand, and with a flick of her wrist, the energy around him dissipated. Another flick, and Omega Man was airborne, hurtling through the skyline in a trail of broken glass and fading light. He disappeared over the horizon with a distant boom.

Beatrice exhaled, brushing the dust off her dress. Her gaze lingered on the ruins of Avalon City. Fires still burned, and cries echoed faintly in the distance. She raised her hand, and the air shimmered as a soft, golden wave swept across the city. The flames sputtered out, debris shifted, and the cries quieted as injured citizens found themselves moved to safety.

For a moment, the world was still.

Beatrice lowered her hand and turned away, her expression unreadable. "Guess that's enough hero-ing for one day," she murmured. As she walked, her stomach growled audibly. "Now... where's the nearest ice cream shop?"

She vanished into the smoke, leaving Avalon City to wonder who—or what—had just saved it.
