COURTNEY

Another letter in the mail, with a fancy cursive "Courtney" written on the front. "Good Lord!" I mumble to myself and throw away the envelope.

I have been getting letters like this nearly every day for the past 3 months.

From who you may ask? My ex boyfriend Duncan, who is currently in jail for some reason unbeknownst to me.

My phone rings shortly after I toss the letter.
"Hello?" I answer.

"Hey, Court. I just wanted to ask if you got a letter from Duncan today?" asks the voice on the other side of the phone, who I recognize to be my best friend, and my maid of honor, Bridgette.

"Yes," I say while rolling my eyes. "He just won't leave me alone."

"So about that..." Bridgette starts. "He got released from jail today, and he's at my house right now, talking to Geoff."

"Great," I mutter sarcastically. "He's probably about to make his way on over to my house now, as we speak."

"No, but I found out that Geoff gave him your number, because he never likes to think before he acts," Bridgette informs. "I just thought I'd give you a heads up before he, you know, calls you or something."

I can already feel myself growing angrier by the second.  "Well tell him not to, please! Does he not know that I'm getting married in 4 months?" I ask annoyed.

"Why don't you come over here, then? You and Duncan seriously need to talk your issues over," Bridgette insisted.

"He's my ex, Bridge, that's going to be so awkward."

"From like, 8 years ago! Come on, Courtney. You need to get over this," Bridgette defends.

I sigh at her statement, because it was true.

"Fine, I'll be there in 10," I agree and hang up the phone.

I wondered how Duncan would react to the wedding. He never was a fan of Scott, even when we were in high school.

You may be curious about how everything went down with him and I.

We were best friends for most of middle and high school until we started dating our sophomore year until our senior year, when we drifted apart because we wanted two different things.

I wanted to go to law school to become a lawyer, while he wanted to stay close and make his own tattoo business. The law school I was accepted into was farther away, and he didn't want to try long distance.

Me and Duncan never reconciled. We went our separate ways after high school and rarely communicate now besides the letters I've been getting.

I do miss him though. He still was my best friend throughout my entire childhood. I guess now that I'm graduated from law school, we could become friends again.

I pull into Geoff and Bridgette's driveway and immediately notice Duncan's stupid motorcycle on the side of the road. "What an idiot!" I think to myself.

I give a few knocks on the door and wait for it to open.

DUNCAN

I'm currently sitting in Bridgette and Geoff's living room, talking to Geoff about our life lately.

Geoff and Bridgette got married in October of last year, their wedding photos were scattered all throughout the house.

I on the other hand, just got released from jail after 3 months for reckless driving, why you ask?

3 months ago I saw the announcement on Courtney's Instagram that she was engaged to the farm boy of our school. Scott.

Geoff thinks I'm jealous, but he didn't know me and Courtney's relationship. All I want is to be a part of her life again like we used to be, and while she's over here achieving her law degree and getting engaged, I'm not there to congratulate her.

I hear voices at the door, one of them I can make out to be Bridgette and the other was one that I knew all too well.

Bridgette enters  the living room with Courtney following right behind her.

I turn around to look at her, and she looks much different from the last time I saw her.

Her hair was still cut shoulder length, however it was no longer pin straight. Instead, it was a little wavy and she had her bangs cut shorter and brushed to the side.

"Hey, Courtney!" Geoff greeted while standing up to go hug her.

"Hey, Geoff," she responds giving him a hug back.

While her hands are on his back, I notice the gold diamond ring on her finger. It's not that I didn't believe her engagement post, it just feels way too real seeing it in person.

"So, me and Geoff will go outside and cook something on the grill for dinner if you want to stay and talk in here?" Bridgette suggests, already shifting toward the door.

I notice Courtney glance over to me before she answers, "Yeah, that'll be fine."

Bridgette and Geoff leave through the back door, leaving Courtney and I by ourselves for the first time in a long time.
