The reflection staring back at Arnav in the mirror was almost unrecognizable-sharp, commanding, poised. The white shirt gleamed against the darkness of the black tuxedo, the polished black tie and coat making him look every bit the part of a man who was destined for greatness. He straightened his shoulders, running a hand through his hair. The image before him was perfect, the epitome of what his father had always envisioned for him. But despite the well-tailored fit and the sleek silhouette, a knot tightened in his chest.

His father's voice echoed in his mind, a constant refrain that he could never shake off. "You need to be ready, Arnav. This is the future. The company's waiting for you. Don't disappoint us."

Arnav hated how his father's words always hovered in his thoughts like a shadow, even when he didn't want them to. His entire life had been a set of expectations, his every move designed to fulfill the legacy of a name he never asked to carry. His father's ambitions had become his own, a suffocating blanket that he couldn't shake free from. And tonight, once again, he had to play the part.

He adjusted his cufflinks, the sleek silver glinting under the light. His jaw tightened as he stared at his reflection once more. He didn't want this. He never had. But he had no choice. Not now. Not ever.

The drive to the venue was silent. Arnav sat in the back of the car, staring out of the window, watching the world blur past. His father, seated beside him, didn't speak either, his eyes fixed on his phone. Every few moments, Arnav could feel his father's gaze drift to him, no words needed. The tension between them was palpable, but neither acknowledged it. It wasn't necessary.

When they arrived at the venue, the scale of the place struck Arnav-an enormous building that seemed to pulse with power. The lights outside bathed the grand entrance in a cold, calculated glow, and he knew instantly that this event was a far cry from any casual gathering. This was a business dinner-an opportunity for his father to show off his son, to demonstrate that the next generation was ready to take the reins.

Inside, the grand ballroom was filled with businessmen and women-faces he recognized but never cared to know. There were the usual handshakes and pleasantries, the polite smiles that meant nothing. Arnav barely registered the words as his father introduced him to various figures. His thoughts were elsewhere, floating on a sea of discontent, as his father eagerly ushered him from one person to the next.

Then, they entered the private room where the real discussions would take place. The atmosphere in the room was different-charged with purpose. Around a large, polished table sat several men and women, all looking at Arnav with a mixture of curiosity and anticipation. He felt their eyes on him, sizing him up, weighing his worth. It wasn't a new feeling, but tonight, it felt heavier than usual.

"Ah, Arnav," one of the older businessmen said with a deep voice, extending his hand. "It's good to see you. I've heard a lot about you."

Arnav took the man's hand, offering a firm but detached handshake. "Thank you. It's a pleasure to meet you."

The older man's smile was knowing, as though he could already see the man Arnav was supposed to become. "Your father has always spoken highly of you. You're certainly destined for great things, son. The company's future is in good hands."

Arnav couldn't help but flinch at the word son. It always seemed too formal coming from these strangers, too much like a reminder that he was nothing more than the heir to his father's empire.

Another businessman spoke up, his voice rich with authority. "You'll be a great boss one day, Arnav. We all see it. You're smart, capable, and driven. The legacy of the company will be in good hands when you take over."

Arnav remained silent, nodding along as they spoke, offering nothing more than a practiced smile. Inside, his thoughts were a whirlwind. All of them, these men and women, saw him as nothing more than a future figurehead, someone to carry the company forward into another generation. It was clear they didn't care who he really was or what he wanted. They only cared about the image he projected, the legacy he was expected to uphold.
