Calypso found him near one of the water fountains an unknown amount of time later.
"I really can't leave?" Percy asked quietly, running his hand through the streaming water of the fountain, he found that it calmed him a little, kept him grounded. Calypso sat down next to him, close enough that their legs pressed together, she placed a hand on Percy's thigh and squeezed, probably meant to be comforting but failing miserably.
"Yes." She said, and Percy waited for her to elaborate. "Do you know my story, Percy?" she asked instead, a strange intensity in her eyes. Percy frowned and shook his head.
"Not really, something to do with Odysseus, right?" Percy asked, mind still reeling.
Calypso went stiff beside him. Her hand, which she had yet to move from his leg (which Percy really wished she would. He'd never been an overly touchy-feely guy, especially not with people he's barely met.) squeezed tighter, her nails digging into the linen fabric of his pants, and through to the fresh scars on his leg.
Percy left out a sharp intake of breath, shuffling away from Calypso's harsh grip. The goddess seemed to snap out of whatever trans she had been in at his movement and her eyebrows drew together, hands clenched at her sides.
When she turned to look at him Percy nearly flinched, her eyes were empty of any of that soft kindness she'd shown before, now they burnt with hatred .
" Don't speak that- that name in my presence, I-" she cut herself off, scowling before she visibly calmed herself, taking a deep breath through her nose.
Percy watched as she calmed herself, a little shaken. What in the god's name had happened with Odysseus to bring such a reaction out of her?
"This island is my home, my paradise, my birthplace. But it is also my prison " Calypso said suddenly, twirling a long strand in her hair between her fingers as if she were deep in thought.
Percy frowned, eyebrows furrowing. "What do you mean?" he asked hesitantly, not wanting to upset her again.
"The gods imprisoned me here, I am stuck just as much as you are." She said, that same cold edge to her voice, so different from the soft feminine tone she'd been using before.
"Why?" He asked quietly as Calypso stared off into the distance. Above him the sun was setting, casting a soft golden glow over the fields around them. Percy wondered how a prison could be so beautiful .
"Do you know who my father is, hero?" Calypso asked, eyes distant. Percy frowned, trying to think back on his history classes at camp half-blood (though admittedly he'd spent most of them staring out of the window, daydreaming or taking part in a paper aeroplane-throwing competition with the Stoll brothers.)
To be fair to him the answer to 'who is this mythical being's father' was usually Zeus. Though Percy wasnt really getting that vibe with Calypso, her ego wasn't big enough.
"My father is Atlas." Calypso answered for him, "The Olympians imprisoned me here because of my father." She said sadly.
Now that name rang a bell with Percy. He'd had the misfortune of meeting the titan last winter, when he'd imprisoned his friend, Annabeth, and forced her to hold the sky, along with Luke .
Wait, did that mean Calypso was Zoë's sister? Percy tried to look for any resemblance between the nymph and the late lieutenant of Artemis but found none. Calypso was soft where Zoë had been sharp.
" What ? They imprisoned you because of what you're dad did?" Percy asked, appalled. He'd known that the gods were corrupt, but this...
"The gods do not trust their Enemies, Percy. And rightly so. I shouldn't complain. Some of the prisons are not nearly as nice as mine.." She trailed off, a troubled look in her pale green eyes.
"But- but that's not fair!" Percy said, aghast. "Just because you're related doesn't mean you support him! This other daughter I knew, Zoë Nightshade - she fought against him, she wasn't imprisoned."
A small smile stretched onto Calyoso's face at his words and she giggled behind her hand, the light, airy sound a Starling contrast to the cold tone she'd been using.
"Oh, Percy. Your defence flatters me. But I did support him in the first war. He is my father." Percy blinked slowly, startled into silence for a long moment. He definitely hadn't seen that one coming.
"What? But the titans are evil!"
"Are they?" Calypso challenged calmly, reminding him a little of Annabeth.(Annabeth, who he may never see again, his mind reminded him helpfully.)
" All of them? All of the time?" she pursed her lips. "Tell me Percy, do you support the Olympians because they are family or because they are truly good?" She asked and Percy stared .
" They are the reason we are both stuck here now. The reason I have been alone for so long ." Her voice was so sad , percy couldn't help but feel sorry for her.
"I'm sorry." He said genuinely, meeting her sad Almond eyes. "You've really been alone this whole time?"
Another frown tugged at Calypso's lips and she stared down at the soft grass beneath them. "It doesn't matter, I have you now. I'm sure we'll have plenty of fun." She smiled, reaching out to brush his fringe from his face. Percy forced himself to smile back, despite the prickling feeling of discomfort, like ants crawling underneath his skin.
He wasnt planning on staying long, he'd find a way off the island, and who knew? Maybe he'd be able to get Calypso her freedom back too!
"Come on now, it's getting late and you need your rest to recover." The goddess said lightly, getting to her feet and motioning for him to follow after her. Percy got up, only realising how tired he really was when Calypso voiced it.
The goddess smiled softly, grabbing his hand and tugged him back in the direction of the cave.
