Lily had never felt so small.

Her whole world had come crashing down just hours ago. The call from her boyfriend, Jack, had been the last straw. He'd been distant lately, but she never imagined that it was because of another woman. Her heart was still racing, and even though the shock had begun to settle, the ache in her chest refused to go away. She hadn't even been able to cry properly until now.

She sat on the couch, staring blankly at the wall. Her mind replayed the words Jack had said over and over again, and they seemed to get worse each time. "It was just one mistake," he had told her. "It didn't mean anything." He hadn't even tried to apologize, not really. He hadn't sounded like he cared at all.

But it wasn't just his betrayal that hurt. It was the loss of something she thought was real, something she had invested so much in. The relationship had always felt right, hadn't it? The late-night talks, the shared laughter, the soft kisses that left her breathless. She thought they had something special. Now, it felt like everything she had believed in was a lie.

She hadn't wanted to tell anyone about it. Not yet, at least. She didn't want to appear weak or like she didn't know how to handle a breakup. But she couldn't hide it from Emma, not really. Emma, her best friend, who always seemed to know exactly what she needed, even when she didn't.

The knock on her door startled her out of her thoughts. She hadn't been expecting anyone, but she knew instantly who it was.

"Emma," Lily whispered, wiping her tear-streaked face as she stood up and opened the door.

Emma stood there, looking like a breath of fresh air. She was wearing an oversized sweatshirt and jeans, her dark hair pulled up into a messy bun. Her eyes softened when she saw Lily's face, and she didn't hesitate before pulling her into a tight hug.

"I'm here, Lils," Emma whispered, her voice full of warmth and concern. "I'm so sorry."

Lily didn't even try to hold it together. She let herself fall into Emma's embrace, tears spilling over once more. Emma's arms wrapped around her, steady and strong, holding her without question. She didn't try to say anything, just allowed Lily to cry, her fingers gently stroking her back in slow, soothing motions.

"I just—" Lily gasped, her words coming out in broken sobs. "I can't believe he did that to me. He said it didn't mean anything, but... but I can't stop thinking about it. About her." Her voice cracked, and she clung to Emma tighter, as if Emma's presence could erase the pain.

Emma's heart ached at the rawness in her friend's voice. She had known that Jack wasn't perfect, but she never imagined he could hurt Lily like this. Still, she knew exactly what to say, or rather, what not to say. Sometimes, the best comfort didn't come from words at all.

"You don't need to explain it to me," Emma said softly, brushing a strand of hair from Lily's face. "I'm just here. You don't have to carry this alone."

Lily nodded, sniffling, still unable to find the words she needed. Emma led her to the couch, sitting beside her and wrapping her arm around Lily's shoulders. It felt like the world outside had ceased to exist—there was nothing but the warmth of Emma's embrace and the soft sound of Lily's breathing.

They sat in silence for a while. It was a comforting silence, the kind that only people who truly understood each other could share. Emma didn't push her to talk, but she didn't let go either.

"Do you want to tell me about it?" Emma finally asked, her voice gentle.

Lily wiped her eyes and took a deep breath, nodding. "I don't know what happened. One minute, everything felt fine, and the next... he was telling me that he slept with someone else. I never even saw it coming."

Emma kissed the top of her head softly, her hand still resting on Lily's back. "People suck sometimes," she said, the words quiet but full of understanding. "But you're stronger than this. You deserve so much more than someone who'd treat you like that."

Lily's chest tightened at the reminder of how much she had given to Jack. The late nights staying up, the weekends spent together, the inside jokes, the promises whispered in the dark. Had any of it meant anything? Or was it just a game to him?

"I just feel so stupid," Lily admitted, her voice so small now, as if all the strength had drained from her body. "I thought I could trust him."

"You trusted him with your heart," Emma said firmly. "And that's not something to regret. Trust is a beautiful thing, even if he didn't deserve it. The problem is with him, not you."

Lily sighed, her breath shaky. "I feel like I gave him everything... and he just threw it all away."

Emma shook her head, her expression full of conviction. "You didn't give him everything. You still have yourself, Lily. And you're worth so much more than the way he treated you."

Lily let out a small laugh through her tears, her voice shaky but grateful. "I'm lucky to have you."

Emma smiled softly, brushing a tear from Lily's cheek. "You're not lucky, Lils. You're loved. And you always will be. I'm not going anywhere."

The words wrapped around Lily like a warm blanket, and she leaned into Emma's shoulder. It was like she could finally breathe again. The pain was still there, sharp and fresh, but for the first time since she'd found out about Jack, Lily felt like maybe, just maybe, she could move forward. Slowly. But with Emma beside her, she could do it.

"Do you want me to stay?" Emma asked quietly, her voice soft and caring.

Lily nodded, wiping her eyes and offering her friend a small, grateful smile. "Yeah. I need you here. With me."

Emma smiled, leaning in to press a gentle kiss to Lily's forehead. "I'm not going anywhere. Let's take this one step at a time."

And so they sat together, Emma holding Lily in her arms, not saying much more, but offering all the comfort that was needed. For the first time in hours, Lily began to feel the weight of the world lift just a little, replaced by the love and support of the one person who truly understood her.
