You and Daisuke walked side by side, your bags slung over your shoulders and the faint crunch of leaves beneath your boots.
The task was simple: head into the woods, gather firewood, and make it back to camp before sunset.
Easy, right?
At least, that's what you told yourself as the forest stretched endlessly ahead, the trail winding like it had secrets to keep.
Daisuke, of course, was already in peak complaining mode.
He sighed dramatically, kicking a rock that skidded ahead of him on the dirt path."Ugh, I don't see why Curly didn't have Jimmy do this, we're always being sent off like some goddamn—I don't know."
he grumbled, his voice heavy with irritation."Yeah Dai...but you heard Curly!
'Follow this map, don't go off the trail, beware of bears, oh, and try not to run into any mysterious forest creatures!' Sounds real relaxing, doesn't it?""And besides, he's probably just messing with us.
I mean, he loves making us sweat."
You laughed, shaking your head."Well, congrats to him,"
Daisuke snapped, throwing his arms in the air."Mission accomplished!
I'd rather be back at camp listening to one of Swansea's hour-long lectures about hard work and integrity or whatever. At least that's predictable.""This? This is bullshit."
He kicked another rock, this one landing in a small puddle with a satisfying splash. You couldn't help but grin.
"C'mon, it's not that bad. Look, it's just you and me, a trail, and some peaceful forest vibes. Think of it as bonding time."
"Yeah, great, well I hope what we find is a shortcut back to camp.
Or a Dunkin' Donuts."
He sighs. You shook your head, laughing again as you adjusted your pack.
This mission might not be as easy as it sounded, but at least with Daisuke, you'd never be bored. The two of you continued down the winding trail, the forest thickening around you as the sunlight filtered through the canopy above in golden patches.
Every now and then, you'd hear the distant caw of a bird or the rustle of something small darting through the underbrush.
Daisuke, of course, was quick to comment.
"Did you hear that?"
he asked suddenly, stopping in his tracks and craning his neck toward the trees. You glanced over your shoulder, unimpressed.
"What, the sound of nature? Shocking, considering we're in the middle of a forest.""No, no,"
he insisted, his voice lowering into something just short of a whisper. "That rustling. What if it's a bear?""A bear? Really? You're more likely to scare it off with all the noise you're making."
You couldn't hold back your laughter."I'm serious. It could be one of those 'mysterious forest creatures'"
He frowned, crossing his arms."Relax, Daisuke.
The scariest thing out here is you whining about some godamn firewood."
