Jasmine couldn't remember the last time she'd felt this alive—this in control of her own fate. With basketball season nearing its end, her grades improving, and her future plans taking shape, she felt like she was finally standing on solid ground. But just when she thought life couldn't throw anything more at her, it did.
It started with a phone call.
Jasmine was sitting at the kitchen table, doing homework, when her phone rang. She didn't recognize the number, but her instincts told her to answer.
"Jasmine Evans?" a woman's voice asked.
"Yeah, who's this?"
"This is Dr. Lawson from the OB/GYN office. I'm calling regarding your recent test results. We need you to come in as soon as possible."
Jasmine's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean? What's wrong?"
"I'm afraid I can't discuss the details over the phone. Can you come in today?" the woman insisted.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'll be there."
Jasmine hung up, her hands trembling. She stared at her phone, suddenly overwhelmed. It wasn't just the pregnancy anymore. Something didn't feel right.
At the doctor's office, Jasmine sat in the waiting room, her mind racing. She had a thousand thoughts running through her head—what if something was wrong with the baby? What if she couldn't handle it?
When her name was finally called, she followed the nurse into the examination room, her legs feeling like lead. Dr. Lawson walked in a few moments later, holding her chart and looking serious.
"Jasmine, I'm afraid the results of your test show that there are some complications. It's likely you're dealing with a high-risk pregnancy, and we need to monitor you closely."
Jasmine's breath caught in her throat. "What kind of complications? What does that mean for me and the baby?"
Dr. Lawson looked at her with kind, but concerned eyes. "It's still too early to give a definitive answer, but we'll need to do some additional testing. We'll keep a close watch on things, but it's important that you take it easy, reduce stress, and stay healthy. We'll schedule regular checkups moving forward."
Jasmine nodded numbly, her mind struggling to process the words. She hadn't expected this—she had enough to worry about already, but now there was this new fear, this new uncertainty hanging over her.
When Jasmine arrived home, her mother was sitting on the couch, scrolling through her phone. Jasmine couldn't hold it in anymore. She burst into tears, the floodgates opening as all her fears and doubts poured out.
"Mom, I don't know what to do. I'm so scared. They said there are complications with the pregnancy, and I don't know what it means for me or the baby!"
Her mom rushed to her side, pulling her into an embrace. "It's okay, baby. We're going to get through this. I'm here, and I'll support you through every step of the way. I know it's scary, but we'll face it together."
Jasmine wiped her eyes, nodding. "I don't want to mess this up. I'm already messing everything up."
Her mother gently cupped her face. "You're not messing anything up, Jasmine. You're learning, you're growing, and you're doing the best you can. That's all anyone can do. And you're not alone. We'll figure this out."
The next few weeks were filled with doctor's appointments, more tests, and constant worry. Jasmine took her mother's advice and tried to stay calm, but it wasn't easy. The weight of the situation kept pressing down on her, and the once-bright future she had been building now felt uncertain.
At school, she threw herself into her work and basketball, but it was hard to focus. The strain of everything weighed heavily on her. Even though she had cut ties with Malik and Khalil, their absence left a hole that was hard to ignore.
One afternoon after practice, Jasmine sat in the locker room, staring at her phone. A text from Khalil blinked on the screen.
Khalil: I'm sorry, Jas. I've been thinking about everything. Can we talk?
She hesitated for a moment, then typed back.
Jasmine: I don't know if I'm ready for that.
A few minutes later, his reply came.
Khalil: I understand. Just know that I'm here if you ever want to talk.
Jasmine stared at the message, unsure what to feel. Part of her wanted to forgive him—to let him back in, even if it was just as a friend. But another part of her wanted to protect herself from the heartache he'd caused.
In the end, she decided to keep moving forward—on her own terms.
As the days passed, Jasmine's doctor visits became more frequent, but she was starting to feel more empowered. She was facing the unknown, but she was determined to face it head-on.
And then, just when she thought things couldn't get any more complicated, she received a phone call from a college scout.
The opportunity she had dreamed about for years—scholarship offers, a future in basketball—was now a reality. The scout had been watching her games and was impressed with her resilience and performance despite everything she was going through.
But there was a catch.
"If you accept the offer, you'll need to be ready to relocate in the next few months. The school needs to know soon if you're committed."
Jasmine felt a flood of emotions. A part of her had been holding on to the hope that this would happen—that she could rise above all of the chaos and build a future for herself and her baby. But now it felt like a race against time. Could she really handle the demands of a new life, a baby on the way, and school so far away?
She sat there in silence, staring at the phone, knowing that this decision would change everything.
