Professor McGonagall seemed decent enough.
Actually, so far, all of Hogwarts seemed decent enough.
Well, the train ride was pretty boring, but that wasn't the school's fault. Riley Jane just didn't enjoy being crammed into a train compartment with random people because every one was all full of energized students, and she didn't enjoy being stuck with them for hours. The most exciting part about the ride was a timid-looking boy peering his head in to inquire about a missing toad.
The boat ride was marginally better. She got to see the breathtaking sight of Hogwarts Castle from afar. She wasn't crammed in a boat with anyone, because there was only one other occupant who decided to get anywhere near her. It was just her and a skinny boy named Theodore, who was either terrified of the lake or of Riley Jane, not that she wouldn't know why.
"Welcome to Hogwarts," said Professor McGonagall. "The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your Houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your House will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your House, sleep in your House dormitory, and spend free time in your House common room.
"The four Houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each House has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your House points, while any rule-breaking will lose you House points. At the end of the year, the House with the most points is awarded the House Cup, a great honor. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever House becomes yours.
"The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarten yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting."
Her eyes lingered on the boys near Riley Jane. One was the boy who lost his toad. His cloak was fastened under his left ear. Another had fiery red hair that Riley Jane almost couldn't look at directly—instead, she focused on his smudged nose that caught Professor McGonagall's attention. The scrawny boy right next to Riley Jane tried to flatten his mess of hair.
