Worthy Remembering

Chapter 4

As we walked through the office, Charles pointed out various colleagues and introduced me to them. Everyone seemed friendly and welcoming, but I couldn't help sneaking glances at Charles. He was even more captivating up close, with a warm smile and piercing blue eyes that seemed to see right through me.

We eventually arrived at my desk, which was nestled in a cozy corner of the office. Charles showed me how to log in to the computer system and explained my responsibilities as his assistant.

As he was finishing up the orientation, his phone rang. "Excuse me for a moment," he said, answering the call.

I took the opportunity to collect my thoughts and try to calm my racing heart. Being around Charles was like being in a whirlwind – exciting, but also a little overwhelming.

As I glanced around the office, I noticed a few of my colleagues stealing glances at me. I wondered if they were curious about the new girl, or if they were just trying to figure out what Charles saw in me.

Charles finished his call and turned back to me. "Sorry about that," he said, smiling. "Where were we?"

I smiled back at him, trying to play it cool. "You were just explaining my responsibilities," I replied.

Charles nodded. "Right. Well, I think that's everything for now. Why don't you take some time to get settled in and familiarize yourself with our systems? I'll check in with you later to see how you're doing."

I nodded, feeling a mix of relief and disappointment. Relief that the orientation was over, but disappointment that Charles wouldn't be spending more time with me.

As he turned to head back to his office, I called out to him. "Charles?"

He turned back to me, a questioning look on his face. "Yes?"

I hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm looking forward to working with you."

Charles smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I'm looking forward to it too, Madison. Welcome to the team."

With that, he turned and headed back to his office, leaving me feeling a little dazed and a lot intrigued.
