Caitlyn pushed on the latticed window and crawled into her room. She glanced at her bedroom door. Finding it slightly ajar, noting the darkness from the hall beyond, she let out a sigh of relief. Just as she put down her bag, the door opened slowly, revealing her mother leaning against the frame with her arms crossed. Ever knowing. Caitlyn froze like a cornered fox.
"What do you have to say for yourself, young lady?"
Caitlyn was about to form the words "I'm sorry," but her mother had signaled for silence with the palm of her hand as she lazily moved towards. Silence was not something Caitlyn had expected. Before she knew it, her mother was embracing her. Cait wasn't quite used to being taller than her mom. She felt tenderness towards the woman, seeing the gray at her temples. She wanted to hug her mom back, but before she could, her mother had released her with a mischievous smile Caitlyn had never seen. "Did you have a good day?"
Caitlyn wondered if it was a trap at first, but the softness in her mother's eyes told her otherwise. "It was. The best day of my life."
"Really? What did you get up to?"
"Ask me no questions. I'll tell you no lies." The look on her mother's face of both shock and pride had been worth the risk she'd taken repeating those words.
"Well, we won't tell your father about this. You've been very naughty. And there will be consequences. Now, get to bed."
Cassandra walked out the door, grinning at the thought that maybe, just maybe, there was a bit of her own rebellious streak in her daughter. She found her husband where she'd left him in the hall. He tried to put his arm around her, in gratitude for her clemency towards their child. "Oh, no you don't Mister. It's you who's in a lot of trouble later," she warned walking past. He smirked.
Caitlyn hummed in the shower, and as she threw on her nightgown, and as she swayed in her bedroom, dancing.
She drew her book from her bag, leaning against propped, fluffy pillows, and decided, finally, to get a few chapters in before falling asleep. There, pressed between the pages, was the answer to her question. A single daisy. Caitlyn touched the stem with her fingertip. Her heart raced, then sank knowing she'd never see the girl again. She sighed.
"Ugh! I should have kissed her!" She yelled into the pillow she'd just thrown her face into.
It had been. The best day. Ever.
