The kitchen was warm and inviting, the smell of freshly brewed tea mingling with the scent of the forest that seeped through the open window. Leah sat across from Sue and Harry at the small, round table, her hands wrapped around a steaming mug. Ruth sat beside her, a steady and comforting presence, while the quiet murmur of conversation filled the room.
Sue watched Leah closely, her expression a mix of curiosity and quiet affection. “You really do look so much like Harry,” she said, a faint smile tugging at her lips. “But your hair—that’s all you. It’s beautiful, Leah. It’s so long, and so thick. I bet it’s a lot to manage.”
Leah felt herself blush slightly, her hand instinctively reaching back to touch the dark waves cascading down her back. It fell well past her waist, brushing just below her hips. She shrugged, trying to downplay the compliment. “It’s a lot, yeah. But Ruth always said it was my best feature, so I kept it long.”
Sue smiled warmly. “She was right. It suits you.”
Harry nodded in agreement, his deep voice laced with pride. “It’s incredible. You remind me so much of your grandmother, Leah. She had hair like yours—thick and dark, just as beautiful.”
The mention of a grandmother Leah had never known brought a soft ache to her chest. “I wish I could’ve met her,” she said quietly.
“You’d have loved her,” Sue said, her tone gentle. “She would’ve adored you.”
The conversation shifted, and Leah took a deep breath. “I should probably tell you more about me,” she said, her tone light but earnest. “I’m in culinary school right now. It’s something I’ve always loved—cooking. But it’s not just regular cooking for me. I want to focus on learning how to use natural and medicinal herbs in my recipes. Something that’s healthy, healing, but also tastes amazing.”
Sue’s eyes lit up with interest. “That’s wonderful, Leah. It sounds so creative and thoughtful.”
Harry leaned forward, a curious smile on his face. “Is it just herbs you’re interested in, or do you want to explore other natural ingredients too?”
“A bit of everything, really,” Leah said, her enthusiasm growing. “But herbs are where I want to start. There’s so much to learn—like how different herbs can affect the body, help with stress, or even boost energy. I want to create meals that aren’t just food, but something that helps people feel better.”
Ruth smiled proudly, placing a hand on Leah’s shoulder. “She’s been talking about this for years. Even as a kid, she’d be in the kitchen, experimenting with whatever we had.”
Sue’s smile softened, her eyes misting slightly. “It makes me so proud to hear about your dreams, Leah. You’ve got such a good heart.”
Before Leah could respond, the sound of a door opening interrupted them. Heavy footsteps echoed through the hall, followed by a voice—deep, slightly breathless, and tinged with annoyance. “Why is it always me on double patrols?”
Leah turned her head just as a young man walked into the kitchen. He was tall, with broad shoulders and a boyish face framed by short-cropped hair. He froze when he saw her, his dark eyes widening slightly.
“Uh, hi,” he said awkwardly, glancing between her and his parents. “Didn’t know we had company.”
Sue’s face lit up. “Seth! Come here. This is Leah.”
Seth blinked, clearly confused. “Leah?”
Harry stepped in. “Your sister.”
Leah’s eyebrows shot up. “Sister?”
Sue laughed softly. “Yes, your younger brother, actually. Seth, this is Leah.”
Leah stared at him, trying to process the information. Seth seemed equally stunned, his gaze flicking between her and their parents. “Wow,” he said finally. “I wasn’t expecting that.”
“Neither was I,” Leah admitted, though a faint smile tugged at her lips.
Seth recovered quickly, stepping forward and offering a hand. “Well, it’s nice to meet you, Leah. Welcome to the family.”
Leah shook his hand, feeling the strength in his grip. “Thanks, I guess.”
Sue smiled at the exchange, her eyes brimming with emotion. Then her gaze shifted toward Ruth, who had been quietly observing the reunion.
“Seth,” Sue said, gesturing toward Ruth, “this is Ruth. She’s the incredible woman who raised Leah.”
Ruth smiled warmly, her pride evident. “Hi, Seth. It’s nice to meet you.”
Seth’s expression softened as he nodded. “Thank you… for taking care of her.”
Leah glanced between them, her heart swelling with gratitude as Ruth stepped further into the conversation.
Sue reached out to Ruth, her eyes filled with sincerity. “We can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for Leah. You’ve given her the life we always wanted for her.”
Ruth’s voice was steady but filled with emotion. “I’ve always seen her as the greatest gift. And I want her to have everything she deserves, including this—knowing you all.”
The atmosphere softened further, the weight of the moment giving way to a shared understanding. Leah, surrounded by the love and respect of the people who mattered most, felt the first threads of a family she was only beginning to know.
