The next day, the school was eerily silent. The usual hum of chatter and laughter was replaced with hushed whispers and gasps as news spread like wildfire.
Chahyeon’s body had been found early that morning, near the back of the school building. The administration, in shock and scrambling for answers, had immediately declared the day a school holiday. Students were sent home, escorted by teachers trying to maintain calm.
Nanhee waited at the gates for Jungwon. When he appeared, his face was unreadable, calm as always, his camera bag slung casually over his shoulder.
“Hey,” she greeted softly, falling into step beside him.
He nodded in response, keeping his eyes forward.
They walked in silence for a while, the only sound their footsteps crunching against the gravel path. Nanhee kept sneaking glances at him, trying to read his expression, but he gave nothing away.
Finally, she couldn’t hold back any longer. “Do you… know anything about what happened to Chahyeon?”
Jungwon didn’t falter, didn’t miss a step. His face remained impassive, and when he finally turned to her, his gaze was steady. “No. Why would I?”
Nanhee blinked, caught off guard by how smoothly he lied. There was no hesitation, no flicker of guilt or unease. Just calm, detached certainty.
“I don’t know,” she mumbled, feeling suddenly foolish. “I just thought… Never mind.”
They continued walking, the tension easing slightly.
Strangely enough, Nanhee felt a sense of relief. Chahyeon was gone. The weight of his presence, the constant fear and anxiety he caused—it had lifted.
“I feel… better,” she admitted quietly. “Now that he’s gone.”
Jungwon didn’t respond, but his lips quirked up ever so slightly. He kept his gaze on the road ahead, hands tucked into his pockets.
They walked the rest of the way home like nothing had happened.
Nothing at all.
