Elvia escorted us into the train taking us to the Capitol. I was seated in a chair on the side of the train, Jasper a little ways away from me, looking deep in thought. All I could think about is who our mentor was going to be. District Four has plenty victors, I'm just wondering if they'll take a popular one or a less known one.

Speak of the devil, somebody walks into the train, assuming it's our mentor I look in the direction. Oh, great.  I think as I lay eyes on the person who's supposed to be helping us survive. With his tan skin, sea-green eyes, and dimples, it's a hard miss. Finnick Odair.

I'd never really talked to him before, I just knew he was a cocky, grinning bastard, who thought he could whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. He only won because of his looks, I bet if he was ugly, he would be dead by now.

Finnick's wearing a cocky smirk on his face as he enters, sizing up me and Jasper. "My tributes. I'm sure you two will make me proud, eh?" He says with a chuckle.

Jasper's snapped out of his trance when he hears Finnick's voice. "I-I don't know, Mr. O-Odair.." He stammers. Strange. At the reaping, he was all arrogant, and Mr. Confidence. But now he's acting like a stray little puppy.

Finnick raises an eyebrow. "Nervous, are we now?"

I wish I could go punch that smirk off his face.

"I-I," Jasper continues, struggling to find the right words. "I-I'm gonna die in there, I know it.." He states, looking down.

Finnick's smirk fades, but it quickly comes back "Oh come on, don't think like that. Besides, you have a much better chance with me as your mentor." He says, sending a wink my way.

Why couldn't I have gotten a different mentor?

"You've been awfully quiet, Lilac." He says, chuckling once again.

"How do you already know my name?" I say firmly, glaring at him.

He puts his hands up in mock surrender. "Woah, woah, no need to get feisty," He says flashing his perfect white teeth. "And I know your name from the reaping, use your head."

I scoff at his bluntness. "Don't need to be so direct about it."

"Well, how else am I supposed to prepare you both for the harsh realities of the arena?"

"Humor me, then." I mumble

"Let's start with the basics," He begins. "Strenghs, what are you good with?" He inquires, turning a bit more serious, but still keeping up the charming facade.

Jasper hesitates before answering. "I- uh, love to read, it's like a whole other world."

"I meant physical strengths, survival skills, that sort of thing." Finnick says obviously.

"Oh.. I've never been that type of person, like I said, I'll most likely die in that arena." He goes on to make an innocent face that every citizen in the Capitol would believe. It just makes me internally cringe.

What the hell was this kid trying to do?

Finnick sighs before turning to me, "Lilac?"

"I practice with throwing knives, never really told anyone though." I murmur in response.

"You any good?" He asks me.

"I'd say so, I usually hit most of my targets." I say confidentally.

"Good." Finnick replys, looking as if he has a small glimmer of hope for me.

Meanwhile, Jasper is looking down at his hands as if the end of his life has come already. He has a pained look on his face, but it looks as if it's fake. He's trying something, and whatever it is, I don't like it.

"Why don't you kids get some food?" Finnick says, returning to his grin.

Kids? We're literally the same age as him.

"Y-Yeah, that would be good.." Jasper says, scurrying over to eat dinner.

I scoff once before sitting down after him. It's almost like he's pretending to be an innocent child, and even if he is, he's not doing a good job at it.

I look at the food on the glass table. There's all five food groups, with tons of different foods from other districts, foods that aren't common in District Four.

I take a slice of key lime pie, digging my fork into it and eating a bite, feeling the flavor on my tongue. It tasted like heaven.

Then I remember, all this stuff is just a distraction from the games. I put it down and grab some fruits instead. I need to remember my goal, win and get back to Austin. I can't have him go through that pain again.

Even if I have to go through pain for that outcome.
