The Coming Out
Chapter Four
"IT MIGHT BE TIME for us to venture out, Sara. We can do it together", Mitz claimed. I looked her square dead in the eye and told her "I think I will know when it is time for me to venture out, Mitz". And that was that. I was so used to getting my way; I didn't even bother to consider what she wanted. To me, she wasn't the one who went through it, I did. And I wasn't stopping her from hitting the door. I like where I was. But, as a few more weeks went by, I soon began to see a change in her I did not like. She grew so distant and never had anything to say. Besides her personality, her looks were changing. She looked gray and wasn't sure what that looked like. I didn't know if it was just another shade of white, I hadn't noticed before, or was she looking dull? It slowly made me realize that I was not thinking of anyone but myself and she had done so much for me.
So, one bright Saturday morning I chased her into the kitchen and asked her if she would like to go on a walk. Mitz was a little bigger than me, and the walk wouldn't hurt either one of us. She was four years younger than me, and I didn't like it that it seemed as though doom had taken over her life. Maybe it was time for me to give a little, rather than take. So, we put on our sweats, tees and tennis shoes. It wasn't easy since I was jogging when this whole thing started. We jogged at a slower pace than I was used to, and I wanted to just takeoff and leave her behind, but she wasn't the runner I was, so I stayed back. We talked though and that was nice. It had been a long time since we had talked. We stayed out about an hour, and she looked like that was enough, so we headed back.
On the way back, I noticed a car that had circled back around, and I watched as it pulled up against a curb ahead of us, and just shut its motor down. It made me freeze, because that is what he did with his truck. It was like it was just sitting there watching, waiting. I grabbed Mitz' arm and turned her around and told her to keep walking, and we headed back the way we had come.
As we had gone about thirty steps, I heard a motor turn, and it was coming up behind us.
Without thinking it through, I just hollered and told her to take off running, and we ran towards the nearest open building we could find. It was a little café shop that served hot tea and hot chocolate. We went in and ducked down into a booth, and I watched as it slowly rolled by. Its windows were dark, so you could not see who was even in the car, but I knew it meant something. We stayed for some cocoa, and then we decided to grab a cab. Getting home wasn't the hard part for Mitz, it was the going in. So, I took the lead, and checked behind doors, under beds and every crook and cranny, until I told her it was clear. I knew we couldn't live like this much longer or we both would lose our minds.
Being tuckered out mainly from stress, more so than the walk; we both tucked ourselves in early and I am sure she lay awake in her bed as long as I did, just listening. I told myself that night that tomorrow would be a different beginning and we would have to start coming out.
